Wheely King Noob

Hey guys.
I recently bought a wheely king 4x4 from my local hobby shop. I'm a Tamiya guy at heart but my current project is taking forever so i got the WK for some fun whilst i wait.

Succife to say i'm in love with it now. From it's ability to crawl as stock to it's ability to be powerfull enough even with it's single motor to spin those huge wheels on dirt

I have some questions.
I use a Sigma pro peak charger. But with this and setting it to charge my standard wheelie king battery pack at 1.5amps the charger tells me it is finished after 3 mins. The battery when i put it into the truck lasts about 1 minute. Not good
it charges other batterys fine and the truck and battery are brand new. Do i need to break it in or something?

Also i've already soldered low risistance cable from the speed control to the motor also so that it decreases power loss. It's a bit more torquey now

I came across this link however

http://myrcmt.com/review/wheely/

It says the wheely King standard ESC can accept a 7 cell pack and is also water proof to an extent. Can someone verifie this?
it's an old article and i'm not sure if it was a myth or just subject to the older 2wd kings.

Also
i've been looking for a Multiplex 600 for sale for my truck (prefferably that ships to the uk)
I've had no luck either though
Can anyone send me some links if possible?

I really want both a lil more speed and power from my wheely king.

Any advice is appretiated

I charge at 4-5 amps, which will give you more punch but shortens overall battery life. You probably got a false peak which sometimes happens with a new pack. When that happens, I usually re-peak it till the pack feels fairly warm. Sometimes it helps to charge at a lower rate the first few times till it's broken in. As far as the ESC being waterproof, I wouldn't test that theory. For winter/wet running, I put the ESC and reciever inside a ballon, cheap insurance and it works great. Not sure on how many cells the Jolt can take, since mine went up in smoke the very first day :ack.

How did you manage to melt the jolt
I was thinking balloons but wasn't sure how that would go with the ESC getting a bit warm.
I might break in the battery pack with the original charger a few times. After all it doesnt automatically cut itself off

Mine went up in smoke the first day too. I replaced it with a Novak XRS. I think the stock ones are just really poor quality ESCs. Some people seem to get one that's OK, but a lot have burned it up fairly soon after getting the truck.

I just bought this one here. Cheap and cheafull and should have a lot more kick to it than the stock motor does in regards to torque.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJ765

Using that and a 7 cell pack i should be doing alright for power. I do a lot of bashing with my trucks and i need a wee bit more speed, but a lot more torque. I think with this and some high quality gear components and changing the ratios a wee bit i can have a moderate top speed aswell as a big torque increase

Any opinions on this?
I'm well aware this could strip the gears, but that's always a good excuse to upgrade

should be a good choice motor.
Torque motor so you can really play with your gear ratio
Yeah, that's what i'm hoping for. If i extend the chassis with this motor and lock the rear diff and waterproof it, i should have a really good truck for hill climbs in the dirt and the likes.

There's beaches, forests and an abandoned quarry fill with san and grass where i am.

Stock it's ok on it all, but the small motor struggles to kick up that dirt when it gets bogged down.

This should sort it out

Sounds like an ideal "playground" for the WK :tmb. More power definitely adds to the fun.

So far i cut the normal power connections from the motor to the ESC. Then i replaced the wire with really thick low resistance wire and soldered it directly to the motor
Couple this with a nice 7cell 4600Mah NIMH battery pack and it's got the power it should have had out the shop.

It really does fly. I'll get some videos this weekend.
Gonna be good when i get the 600 series motor and then apply a deans connection to the battery pack.

Well that's me got my Multiplex type 600 series motor installed. I opted for the 22 turn varient. Currently got the jolt soldered directly to it and running a 4600mah battery pack with deans connection on it. An 8.6v pack i should say aswell.
The jolt was getting really warm today, but took a bashing well. I done a lot of stop/starts and tried some donuts, climbs ect.
Jolt got so hot i couldn't keep my hand on it for more than a few seconds. Motor was still cool.

Performance wise my gearing is still stock.
I can hear the gears jumping teeth just now with the awesome torque i've got.
There's deffo more torque than the Saturn motor at 8.6 volts that's for sure.
Top speed wise i've lost 1 or 2 mph i reckon. Which is unusual and dissapointing

i thought like this

22turn = more speed than 27 turn as lower winds
And also 600 series > 540 series for torque due to larger amature.

More torque certainly, but not enough speed.

I reckon i can mess around with the gears now though with this extra torque to increase top speed a little. It's doing about 11mph flat out i think
Looking for it to be doing approx 17mph or so
Not stupid fast as i still climb hills with it and don't want to fry the motor with too long a gearing whilst bashing

Can anyone recommend a decent set of spur and pinion gear which will take a bit more abuse, and also if possible a good combination to give a slight speed increase over stock of around 5mph

I have an orion 21t method r motor w/96 24 gearing and it rocks, its fast enough for me and it also has really good torque.I also am running a venom 3000 stick pack with stock esc, plus its stretched out to a 12'' wheel base. I love my king!!! Its so fun!!!Oh ya the rear diff is locked with an axial diff locker.Gears are robinson racing and hold up well, have a 24 t alum pinion and a delrin spur.Haven't busted yet.

I opted for a Robinson 90tooth spur for extra strength and a robinson superlite pinion 24t for less rotational mass a slightly more top speed. I don't want to lose too much torque after all. If the jolt goes pop then i'll get a nice no limit water proof esc and marry it up with a nice high torque waterproof servo

The jolt is doing well to be fair.

22 turn 600 size motor with a 7 cell 4600mah nihm pack.
Bashing around and doing hillclimbs ect and it still lives!
Battery life is approx 50 mins with this set up of messing around
