What other three speeds have you seen???

Hello I am looking into a new project and am wanting to be able to add a three speed tranny into it. I was looking at a Kyosho Madforce three speed ( very efficeint and light and low drag) or a Savage three speed ( Tough and easy to get and reverse possibilites.) But before I proceed I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas? I have considered Tmaxx and Revo trannies but I am trying to get three speeds here. I have heard of three speed conversions for T-maxxes but have never heard how well they work. Anyone heard of a Revo three speed conversion? This will be going in a large but light weight two wheel drive monster type buggy for the sand dunes. It will have a serious brushless system sitting in it and be for airing out over big dunes and sand dragging. Also does anyone here have expierence with the Savage reverse module? Does anyone who has or had one feel they cause a lot of drag in the tranny?? I am favoring the Savage tranny at this point for toughness and reverse option but wanted to ask you all for others I may have forgot. (Not sure about Shumacher 3 speed as its a belt take off to the diffs.) I almost need a shaft coming out of the tranny to avoid funny extras but will entertain all ideas. THANX!!! Bill

I take it you are already aware that nitro trannies shift automatically via centrifugal clutch once the proper RPMs are reached, so no manual shifting is possible. This will be one 0000 of a buggy. Have you decided yet what r/c you are going to use as the base?

Yup yup

I am TOTALLY aware that nitro motors trannies shift automatically ( Most do I know there are a couple exceptions) THATS WHAT I WANT!!!!!! I have seen and heard a lot of people tell me that an electric motor will not make a normal nitro autoshifting tranny (T-maxx or Revo or Savage) shift through the gears... Makes me sad.... I have brushless motors that have more torque and WAY more RPMS than a nitro motor and they have NO problem shifting through gears. I always thought the emaxx should have been built that way. Auto two speed and hit the buttom for reverse. Thats why I am considering the Savage tranny. I want this thing to EXPLODE out of the hole and not stop. As for the chassis I have a kind of thing going on. I have been eyeing a HPI 5B buggy but they are (to me) a bit heavy. I happen to have 14 MRC Thunder Kings sitting in the garage and they are almost as big and a LOT lighter. With some brutal power and a way to get it to the rear tires I think I can make them fly. Four of them are running Nitro and FLY as it is. With a much stronger tranny I can put some real power through it. Plus sell the trannies to others who need/want them for thier trucks. After the tranny I plan to mount it and get the gearing where I need it with chain drive setup to the rear and try both a diff and a spool. We all already know Thunder Kings can handle MAJOR air. I am going for a buggy that will be able to best a B5 At about half the weight and strong brushless I think I can do it. I also happen to have a lot of spare parts.... But I may still build a custom Chassis. Might still try to consider Savage rear suspension or Losi LST as well. I just want to avoid the 90 degree ring and pinion as they sap a LOT of power. Its gonna have chain drive to the rear off the trannys output. Bill

Sorry. I couldn't stop my self. :D

the problem with using a nitro tranny is they "coast" so you'll have no brakes with an electric motor unless you put in a disc brake setup.

I'll have to remember you when I need TK parts.

I think the TK chassis is great place to start.

Coast brakes good......Brushless brakes...not bad

I am fine with a small brake servo actuating the brakes. You can actually do a few things with certain brushless speed controls that are forward only with no brakes (Like a plane might use) to get a smoother powerband and more power. Its all you need! Servo brakes I have found are a good bit smoother than most brushless brakes anyway. Besides there are always a lot of kids around to use for slowing down...... Just Kiddin!! Bill
