Very first Clod for me

They have to be identical ESC's in order for them to work "together" efficiently and run cool.

When the motor is hot, too much gear.
When the batteries are hot, not enough gear.
When the ESC is hot you have exceeded the motor limit or specifications of the ESC.
Jay, can you explain this as far as pinion and spur sizes go ?
Like too much gear = big pinion small spur or small pinion large spur ?
I'm having somewhat similar issues with temps, like Mastertaco's .

Gear Ratios

Too much gear was a reference to the # of teeth he had on the pinion gear... as in he had too many teeth on the pinion.

Gear ratio can be computed directly from the numbers of teeth on your pinion and spur.

(gear ratio)=(# teeth on the larger gear or spur) divided by (# of teeth on smaller gear or pinion). For example, my Blackfoot has a 54 tooth spur gear and a 13 tooth pinion.

54 divided by 13 equals 4.15384615 which when rounded is a 4.15 to 1 ratio.

The pinion has to turn 4.15 times in order to turn the spur gear once. Installing a smaller pinion with fewer teeth will increase the gear ratio.

54/12=4.50
so the new ratio is (4.50 to 1) or (4.50:1)

Now with one less tooth, the pinion has to turn 4.50 times before the spur will make a single revolution. The more times the pinion has to turn before the spur makes a full revolution, the slower the vehicle will go. Lowering the ratio between the pinion & spur gear will increase the same vehicles top speed.

Gear Ratio Calculator http://www.precisiongear.com/pgtechratio.htm

A stock Blackfoot has a 52 tooth spur & a 10 tooth pinion or a 5.20:1 ratio which is considered a pretty "low" gear. I am looking to go faster, so I changed the stock gear ratio to 4.15:1 which is considered a "higher" gear. I have a two options (54 or 52) when it comes to my spur gear. My pinion options are 9,10,12, or 13.

54/13=4.15:1
54/12=4.50:1
54/10=5.40:1
54/9=6.00:1

52/13=4.00:1
52/12=4.33:1
52/10=5.20:1
52/9=5.77:1

So I have a variety of ratio's I can run in my Blackfoot's transmission.

4.00:1 This ratio is the "higher" gear and will spin the rear wheels the fastest.
4.15:1
4.33:1
4.50:1
5.20:1
5.40:1
5.77:1
6.00:1 This ratio is the "lower" gear and will spin the rear wheels the slowest.

Notice how the gear ratio jumps from a 4.50 to a 5.20 because I do not have an 11 tooth pinion. There would also be a greater variety of ratios if I had a 53 tooth spur.

well back to my truck now lol.. made myself some wheel wideners for my new tires(their gonna show up tommarow hopefully) getting some Traxtor Xl tire for it so they are gonna be a little bigger and wider( reason i made the wideners)

anyway heres some pics of the flex now had to take an indoor shot since it was dark by the time i got done making the wideners(what took the longest i had to wauller out the hex key hole so the nubs would fit they seem nice and tight hey and for only 10$ alot better then spending 40$ for some wideners lol

and everything i used to make my wheel wideners

Outdoor Shots will come tomarrow after i mount some tires(hopefully)

well thats a fail.. gotta rethink those wideners rims looked like they were cracked a bit when i took a look at them last night..(that was a fail lol well atleast i have some new rims on the way already lol)

Do you have a pic of the home made wheel wideners and how much did it widen the truck.
ill get a pic of them without wheels on. and they make it about 1 1/2 inch wider seems like it(ill get exact measurements in a bit)

edit:

Each side sticks it out 3/4 of an inch, so 1 1/2 inches all around(adding both sides)

More Pics

Click the picture for the HD version

This is what is needed to make these wideners
20x M4x20 Hex Key Bolts
40x M4 Nut
4x 1/2 inch M4 inner Threaded Spacer
4x M4x5(not exactly sure the shortest ones) Hex Key Bolts
4x Hardened Washer( i still have yet to get the rest of these lol)

bad to say but if you have to let the store clerks get your bulk hardware this will cost more then 30$ but im ina a small town no one watches so i made .73 Cent items 20cent items(lol also pocketed a couple of bolts) since it would cost 14 for the hex key bolts 12 for the nuts then another 5-6 dollars wth the spacers and washers. if i woulda payed full price i woulda just gotten pupose built spacers(lol) i ended up only paying about 13$ or something like that for all my parts for this(in my experiance just avoid Home Depot or major chains for the cheapest price) if you go toa wholesale store you might be able to get them for around 10-20$ with out problems not exactly sure tho.

That looks awesome man I mean it. I wanted to put those tires on my old school short wheelbase clod but foolishly bought some imex bajas on eBay instead that were all flat and out of shape.

Yea with a few more bucks into this thing its gonna look awesome(mainly new chassis... and motors thinking of putting my drifter up for trade in bst section)

Those tires are massive and awesome! I've been staring at them on RC4WD's website for a bit now. Nice to see how they look on a Clod finally!
yea i was staring at them for about a week too when they came up for sale on here(mainly was just trying to find a pic of them on a clod lol)

only thing i can say thats bad(dont really know but only really messed around with stock clod tires so not exactly sure of other tire thickness) but the end of the treads(where they V into the next Tread) they seem really thin.. seems like with alot of road/sharp rock travel they would rip easy so i deff will be staying away from gravel pits with these on...(unless i can find a p-gravel hill lol)

also really need wheel wideners too cant even turn without the tread hitting and wedging into the linkage(lol)

ok got a problem.. tire wobble and lots of it...

how do i go about and fix it?

may have found out why, tires have a flat spot.. im gonna leave them out in the sun tomorrow for awhile see if that gets them perfectly round again

Another thing you can do is get some foam inserts if the heat from the sun does not do anything.

they got foams in them but they have a bend in them so im thinking thats actually what it is hopefully heating them up will do the trick tho.. i drove it around for maybe 10min or so was REALLY wobbly at first it seemed to mellow out a little bit after running them for a few min.

when i took them out fo the box they were sent in a couple of them were oblong but they seemed to set and get round again(at a glance anyway) also dosent look like ill have to glue the tires to no slip at all when full throttle take off
