you're going to run the MSC? really?

have you had any luck with your stock front hubs locking? I only had mine lock up like 25% of the time at best before I ditched them for a set of rears
Front hubs you need to use a non sticky type lubricant. Then they'll lock up every time they should. Some even say to run then dry and cleaned.

yeah but you still dont get 4wd in reverse

I might try a front hub on one wheel to see if I can get the best of both worlds at least in 2wd

Yeah, it's all I have for it right now. It's the way they ran them back in the day before ESC's.

Yes, my front hubs lock as soon as you shift into 4 wheel drive low, and no, there is no 4WD in reverse with the stock front hubs. Putting rear
hubs on the front will give you 4WD in forward and reverse, but it decreases your turning radius and is harder on the front-end parts.

I plan on just keeping the stock hubs clean.

I did install the aluminum one piece spur gear in the transmission...

The stock clutch is still in really good shape, I just wanted to swap it out, before I blew it out. :D

^^^ Thanks MonsterFord. :tmb I appreciate your compliments. They are pretty neat trucks, and I am so happy to finally have my hands on one. Still got some work to do to this one before it is trail ready though. The ESC arrived yesterday. I need to scrounge-up some wiring materials and find a good spot to mount the thing, then test it and see if it actually works. The ESC doesn't look bad for being 20 years or more old... we'll see what happens when I hook a battery up to it.

Yesterday was a nice day , so I decided to run my truck and see if it works. Here are a few pictures from yesterday's test run.

I entered the picture below in the Ride of the Month "Action Shot" poll... It has not received a single vote. **EDIT** Now I see I have two votes**EDIT** (Thanks guys.):)
There sure is a lot of peer pressure when it comes to voting on this poll. :hi5

Well, the suspension is pretty soft and it allows for some good articulation, so I'm happy with the leaf spring change and U-bolt flip mod. The mechanical speed control is working, but it is very primitive, and does not offer anything close to precise control. The ESC that I plan on dropping in arrived on Monday. Hopefully, the addition of an ESC, will be an improvement in performance too. At least I will have some brakes.... :tong

Thanks for taking a look.

Thanks TXT-2.0, These trucks are slow and bounce all over the place. :tong They are pretty fun to drive though. :tmb

the bouncing means REBUILD YOUR SHOCKS

there's no kit, but a few drops of brake fluid will swell the seals and some new high weight silicon oil will soak up the bumps. if that doesnt work you can always go to TLT shocks or put dual stock shocks in the rear

^^^ Thanks. The shocks probably could use some thicker oil. I took them apart and re-filled them with Tamiya Soft Dampner Oil. They don't leak... they still look new. They are pretty smooth with the soft oil. IDK??? I was considering dual shocks....:tmb

Nice looking truck. I have owned the 610 reversible novak speed control. It worked great for me. but i did end up giving it away as i went brushless in all my rides. Even though i now own all four of these vintage tamiya 3-speeds i have never driven one. Funny how that worked out. I just couldn't bare the though of scratching one. Thats what my 1/8th scale brushless cars are for. Hard thrashing! :tmb

Thanks. :) I have the Novak 610 in hand but have not tested it yet to even see if it works. Been busy with other things. Thanks for sharing your experiences with it sir. It's an oldie for sure so, the truck will remain somewhat period correct but, hopefully it will make for a good running truck. :tmb

Congrats on owning all four vintage 3-speeds. No need to be afraid of driving them though. Mine traveled all the way from Amsterdam... It went through customs and the whole deal. If it can take that, it can take putting around in my backyard. :tong

Thank you very much sir. Having all the vintage 3-speeds is quite an accomplishment and one day I hope to be able to say the same. :wish

nice way 2 use 2 different tires if ya didnt notice:)

:shk
I have been patiently waiting for some one to point that out alexakers. :tong

I noticed that they did not match not long after I posted these pictures. I bought two sets NIP off eBay and each package had one tire that was molded incorrectly. I contacted IMEX and after some social engineering, a few e-mails, and using this thread as proof of the problem... I was able to get the tires replaced free of charge. I have yet to post new photos of the truck with the new tires. I still have the other two unique tires and two normal spares. I do not know why the tires were made and packaged like that but, I have seen one other person with the same problem I had, and Imex took care of him too. Thanks for taking a look alexakers.

Yes, I had a little talk with some folks over there and they did take care of it. I would suggest to anyone that is thinking of purchasing some of these tires to deal with IMEX directly. Who knows how many more sets there are of the blems on eBay.

did you try that ESC yet?
I have one and it may be old but works like new. I had one back when they were in production too. They are not quite as smooth as many of the modern ESC's but they're not bad either. What is nice is you can run 8 cell packs on them, that's a good thing for many applications. Mine is in the Troops ''package'' thunderking somebody will get.
