Thinking about getting an SCT...

Thinking about getting a short course truck for my bday.....but not sure what to get? 1/10 or 1/8? Nitro or Electric?

I know Traxxas has the Slash and Slayer, Losi has a good looking 1/10 sct...Team Associated SC8e looks really really good and so do the SC10s...I think HPI makes 1..and I think Tamiya makes 1 too...

Any Suggestions???

I was at my local hobby shop and they had a slash on the counter. It was 4wd with 2.2 wheels and proline dirt paws and that thing looked mean!

The hpi rtr electric looks real nice too from what I've seen in the website.

If I was gonna get one i would want 1:10 electric which are already bigger that anything I have they dwarf a stampede and are even bigger than a clod.

Id either go hpi or traxxas for parts support and hop up support and you know tjey both make bashble rigs. Neither of them are the most race ready but I'm not a racer so :)

A lot of it will depend on what you want to do with it (race? bash? both?). If racing you also need to factor in what class you'll be participating in. I would also factor in what your LHS supports and stocks parts for.

I would be racing and bashing with it....I think we have 2 or 3 classes here in 1/10 and 1/8 ( I actually meant to put 1/8 *fixed)

I think I wanna stay with Electric unless I go 1/5 scale lol...but I like the SC8e but thats the only 1/8 ive seen.. and if I went 1/10 I like the one from Losi and TA

What are the classes? Is there a Spec Slash class? Stock? Mod? That will make a difference too in which class you can race it with the stock electronics.

At my track stock class is 17.5 brushless - so trucks like the SC10 RS are not legal in stock form due to the 3300kv motor. Those trucks would have to race in mod.

Since racing is part of the equation you'll have to decide which class you want to race as that could also influence your decision on which truck to get.

I'll give my opinions on the ones I have owned
Slash 2wd is a great basher, indestructable but no means a true racer
SC10 is hands down the best handling 2wd can be raced stock, and bashed but not as much as a slash
SC8 I converted mine to electric before AE and it is my favorite, bullit proof fast handles great and bash or race worthy stock setup
Jammin 4x4 is fast, handles well a racer that can be bashed if you get a front bumper skid
Ofna 4x4 is fast, handles 1/2 decent but is brittle in a couple areas not a basher
Traxxas 4x4 slash is, well, crap. You'll wrench on it more than driving it if you drive hard. Handles poorly.

HPI is coming out w/ a 1/8th buggy and a SC truck both electric so look for 1/8th to pick up more popularity

Hey william, I was wondering what is so different between the 2wd and 4x4 slash besides 2wd and 4wd?

the 2wd is a giant pede/rustler, all the bugs worked out
4wd debris locks up the gears and center driveshaft. Axles bend like butter in a microwave. Heavy and high COG compared to other 4x4 SC's

Thanks guys... not sure of the class names but we have a 2wd class for the sc10, losi strike, 2wd slash and others like that...a group of guys do race 1/8 scale but mainly for fun...and they have a 4x4 nitro class for fun....so a decent choice if i wanted to race...

@Will.... I saw the hpi 1/8sct it looks nice and the sc8 is the best looking from wat i see.

@JK.... i will have to double check the rules and see wat they allow... it didnt say any motor restrictions...where i am alot of guys race for fun and 2 serious classes, if i go north or south it gets more serious which i would consider doing

I have a Durango, but if I was to suggest a strong and fast SCT it would be a Ofna!!They really don't don't need any upgrading to be competitive, and they can take a good beating!!My neighbor beats the $)-(it out of his something terrible:eek!!

I would love to find a second E-Revo cheap and make it an "E-Slayer" to run against the Slashes owned by some friends.

I have been racing SC for over a year now and started with Slash and quickly outgrew it and decided on an SC10 FT and simply put,Love It. Handles like a dream and alot of B4/T4 parts fit it and holds up real well to track abuse both indoor on carpet and outdoor on clay. Very easy to maintain and setup as well. I have been more than satified with mine and would recomend one to anyone.I even score spares on ebay for cheep. I just recenly got a spare front and rear bumpers complete for $2.lol Drop me a PM if I can help any further. Enjoy the Hunt.:) l8r,Wrench.

So lets talk motors and gears.....

i want to go straight to bushless so what is a good brushless setup for SCT? No system kv limit to worry about but i dont want so much power it is uncontrolable... castle sidewinders? mamba max? traxxas VXL? wat is a good kv limit to stay near? i was thinking of using the 3500kv VXL but wasnt sure...

What is everyone running in their SCTs 1/10 scale? we can use up to a 2s lipo too..

I was at my lhs the other night and it happened to be race night.
I was watching the sc trucks warming up and they caught my eye.
Specifically the slash and an sc10.
I've been seriously thinking about getting one to bash ever since.
Im leaning towards slash due to cost and parts availability.
Thanks Bill for steering me away from the 4x4 slash!
I too would like to hear what you guys like for motors and all.
:)

depends, on if your 4x4 or 2wd
4x4's the novak 6.5t or 5.5t maxx motor on 7 cells or 2s lipo. Tekin also has a comparable motor
ESC's castle Mamba Max Pro because it has a sensor port, those motors are sensor type

2wd's the vxl motor or the castle 3800kv sct motor. Once you go over that wheel spin becomes a huge factor in control
ESC I'd choose sidewinder or MM Pro

think a castle 4600 would be too much for a 2wd slash on 2.2s?
could probably make up for it in gearing, right?

you will want the castle link so that you can give it a throttle curve
With a throttle curve you'll gain back low end control
Whatever you do stay clear of the traxxas ESC because it just loves to spin tire

Gearing won't make it all that easy to control a hot motor alone in a SC truck with the skinny tires
In my SC10 the only change being the ESC I knocked 3 seconds off my laptime at the Warwick park track. There were 2 tight corners and the track is a gravely sand mostly.

too bad!
i would really like to use a vxl esc (if and when i get a slash!)

i want to be able to run in the snow and mud.

well if you don't care about low end control and any sort of lap time and spinning tire all over the place is your thing go traxxas :p

and if you get a slash, stuff some 3mm threaded rod or an old clod steering link insde the traxxas drive shafts to prevent colapse
