What that man did is so vile it cannot even be discussed on this forum and it is certainly not a topic of discussion for children. The "Media" aren't to blame for what he did either. Seems to me he has a definite problem with alcohol abuse. He was at a Fort Worth bar and drank several "Captain Morgan and diet cokes" 5 days before the Stupid Bowl. Who do we blame now??? The bartender???

The justice system may have failed to press charges, but the court of public opinion is in full session, and there is no escaping it.
Yeah, so vile it cannot be repeated here on RCMT but it can be repeated all over national tv from noon time until game time the day of the super bowl and everyday leading up to it. Between getting the dirt on Big Ben every 5 minutes and then throw in the commercials on how to get a better hard on........it just makes for stellar conversation pieces with the kids. If people want to get up on a soap box and rant and rave maybe shine the light where needs to be shined.......straight at the NFL. The league has the power to control what they want the media to talk about and they took the restraints off and let them go.

Just sick of it all......... Let it go.....

^^:tmb^^ This is exactly why I don't watch TV anymore, or pay attention to anything celebrity related. The media is garbage and they waste peoples lives with useless information. Turn off the tv and pick up a book, you'll be better off in the long run.

Still the best sports related add ever.
I remember when that ad campaign came out and how much pub it got. I also remember thinking (as I do now) what a joke it is to even think that someone in the spotlight can be separated from a role where kids might look up to them. Basically this campaign was Nike's and Barkley's way of covering their collective rear ends after Sir Charles acted like such a moron at the Olympics.

You can't ever get away from the fact that kids look up to professional athletes. Over the past couple years my son has taken to baseball as "his" sport. For some reason Brandon Inge captured his fancy, so now he has an Inge t-shirt, Inge jersey, and about 1/2 way though the little league season he started batting with only one batting glove. When I asked him why he's not using both, his answer was straight forward, "Because Brandon Inge only uses one."

While I agree that kids should have better role models it's an inescapable fact of life that kids will look up to people outside of the home and possibly (gasp!) professional athletes. It's also a fact that young kids don't look at things the same way we do as adults. When it was announced this season that Inge might be traded to the Cardinals, my son was bummed out about it. Trying to explain the business side of the sport to a young 8 year old who thinks his favorite player is being traded I probably sounded like the teacher on the Charlie Brown cartoons.

There are still plenty of good guys in sports for kids to latch onto as well.. guys who clearly embrace the role as a role model. In fact I would be willing to be there are more than them than there are D-bags out there.. they just get all the press attention.

You know, when they announced the finalists for Walter Paytons award before the SuperBowl it was the first time I had heard about any of those awesome humanitarian programs and efforts those guys have been spending their time and money on. Those are the guys that should be in the news the majority of the time, those are the guys we should be hearing about during the games. But no, we get to hear about the ones with the decision making skills of teenagers.

All that being said though, its a free country and some guys chose to just do whatever they please. Image be damned. If they want to do that its totally up to them and thats where the Barkley commercial always came in for me. Like it or not he's also right.

Everyone just needs to force their kids to watch more hockey haha. You cant find a sport with less off the ice controversy! You just have to ignore the whole aspect of people pounding each others face in on the ice...

I totally agree...and I'm so glad for whatever reason my son latched onto Inge that he did.

Agreed, but you know the old saying, "Dog bites man isn't news but man bites dog is." Media always goes for the sensational.

He's right, he's just not realistic.

Actually I think hockey fights are a pretty neat lesson. Basically it shows that if you're an idiot and do things you shouldn't do there are immediate and severe consequences. It's kind of like a self policing community...:laugh

Thats how I always looked at it haha. I mean in a sport where you get to have a stick in your hands all the time in close proximity to other people, the ability to settle arguments with staged violence is almost a must.
