I know the rc4wd tires are allowed, but what kit-based tires are used in this class? Are wild Willy tires too big?

The wild willy tires are too big. Either the RC4WD tires or TLT tires will work. You will need to shave the bars on the TLT's. I use RC4WD and have done some experimenting on shavings some on the sidewall. They will work pretty decent right out of the box.
