T-Maxx needs fixin

I was messaging a friend of mine earlier who lives in St. Croix (US Virgin Islands), that I haven't seen in a while and is going to be home (in NH) for my sister's wedding.

He wasn't extremely clear, and didn't remember a whole lot about the truck.
He had some drinks earlier and I'm sure it's been some time since he's ran it, but from what I got out of him, was that he has a T-Maxx that needs some work and that it's big.
He said it's 4.4 but I didn't see any 4.4 T-Maxx's when I checked the Traxxas site.
It's possible he meant 3.3, but I really have no idea.

I doubt I'll even have enough time to get it fixed, never mind the fact I no diddly about nitro.

I understand enough to fix/replace suspension and transmission and parts that are on every RC, but what are things that go wrong with nitro motor setups?

Like I said, I really know nothing about nitro or his truck.
I might talk him into selling it to me, or letting me take it to fix it.

I appreciate any info anyone has to offer.

with nitro its mainly about the engine. you need to make sure there are no air leaks in the fuel lines, you have a clean fuel filter and air filter. learn to tune the engine, tuning the engine is like 95% of nitro. i have a bullet proof t-maxx, i have only run it 2 or 3 times this summer due to the engine and not being able to tune it, nitro also requires you to carry a full tool box where ever you go, 20-30 min prep time to get it running a and 20-30 min after run to make sure your engine has all fuel out and after run oil inside the engine. nitro is a lot of fun but is a hugh headache to keep going. a single grain of sand in the engine will destroy you piston and sleeve, and you will be buying a new piston and sleeve, then going through the 3-4 hr break-in time to heat cycle the engine, then there is the tuning of the engine. when getting a used nitro its best to assume the engine is shot and be prepared to to rebuild it, then is its still good you've come out ahead. last words.... tune tune tune

Thanks for the info.

I know it was a pretty vague question/statement.
I've sent him an email asking several questions, but I haven't heard back yet. Maybe later tonight.

I've seen a few short videos about nitro motors on youtube from expert village.
But yeah, they're maybe 2 minutes long and the guy was just like sand and dirt bad, turn these knobs to tune.
The fuel mixture I understand, didn't know about after-run oil.

I don't know how into the hobby my friend with the T-Maxx is/was.
I know he knows how to take care of motors, had dirt bikes, chainsaws, random stuff. But he/we did break stuff a lot.
If he saw the truck as a "toy" then it was probably abused and might not have had much aftercare. But it's possible.

I'm going to be shipping one of my trucks up there so my cousin can check it out.
He used to have an RC10 when we were kids, but his mom threw it out a long time ago.
I'll also be shipping some equipment; batteries, charger, tires, remote and probably some spare crystals. I didn't think about tools, now I'll be tossing in the necessities.
I have a deal pending with TiddlerRacer for his old E-Maxx and I'm having him ship it there, so me n my cousin or whoever else can run together.

I got a little info out of my friend...

It's the 3.3 and it hasn't been run in 18 months.

That's all I got out of him before he left.
