swelled lipos

So it's been about a month since I last charged my lipos and taking some of the fleet out... to my surprise I noticed the hot weather lately and my garage did a number on my lipos... (i store all my lipos in an ammo can so I am sure that didn't help either). Swelled ones on the right, totally spread apart the hard cases.

So I never seen a puff'd pack before... they feel like they are swelled with air. Oh well, to the trash they go!

Wow! Gensace, same as mine. Weather has been very hot here as well so I guess I will keep an eye on mine. I was thinking of ordering another Lipo but Hobbypartz can no longer ship them to Canada.

Sent from time and relative dimension in space.

Wow, that's quite a of $$$ puffing up on you. I store mine inside in an ammo can, I have Thunder Powers, Proteks, Duratrax, and Venom LiPos. Never had one swell up yet. I did drain a cell in the Venom LiPo, but I was able to revive it by connecting the balance leads on my Triton EQ and giving it a slow charge on the NiCd setting (.5 amps). Seems to be working as well as new, though I've only run it for a few minutes at a time.

yeah they were fully charged... didn't mean too. Last time I went racing I found out the track was closed after I got there and just came home. Did nothing with the charged lipos.

ive only had one swelled lipo and it was frightening for me. i used the guide to stick it in salt/water mix for a few days to discharge it and then i took it to my local battery recyclers. i was crapping myself so i used oven mits to handle it....haha. :cool
also did you use the store charge mode on your charger? i always use it just in case i dont have time to use them during the week.

I've read that the storage of the lipo will only affect the life expectancy of the battery. http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155025 Either way I think it was a combination of things- which I will correct. My garage is HOT in the summer. I will remember to just put a storage charge on them and just charge the day of racing.

Also I forgot about this but i remember allowing my friend borrow these three packs when he first purchased a slash 4x4 and this guy was brutal on his truck (end over end barrel rolls all the time rough). I remember the packs coming back coming apart back then- I thought he just broke the hardcase and taped them shut. I am sure this was just a brew of harsh treatment all the way around. They were destined to die.

Picked up three new packs from Hobbypartz.com for under $100- lessons learned and moving forward :)

Heat kills just about everything.

A friend was at a race, had the lipo in his 4x4 sct, getting ready to go on, was in the sun no more than 15 min, and puffed a little bit. It was 92 degrees at the track... This newest generation of lipos dont like outside heat sources. Its ok to generate its own heat, but add some outside heat...POOF!!!
