Summit on the rocks

I am simply FLOORED that more members on this board do not own a Traxxas Summit- there seems to be little or no interest and/or discussion about this truck at all. I have owned a lot of RCMTs (not 100 like some guys but enough to where I can't recall the exact number) and this thing is the most capable, toughest, reliable, WITHOUT QUESTION the most VERSATILE piece of truck I've ever had the pleasure of beating the crap out of.

In 1999 I built, drove, and loved a truck that was 4 wheel independent suspension, with telescoping driveshafts, cantilevered suspension, w/ onboard lights, dual battery packs and an SUV body, so all of this reminds me of that truck, HOWEVER- that trucks took me a few months of custom building, tweaking, and ordering.. that truck took me over a grand to build, that truck didn't have independent locking differentials controlled by remote, or a high/low speed controlled by remote...with that truck I couldn't get done doing doughnuts and jumps, then pull up to a rock pile and start crawling with a few servo activated truck modifications..and this rig does it all for 550-600 bucks.. and it comes with 2x 7 cell 3000 batteries and a transmitter!?

Can't say enough about this truck...maybe people don't like ti cuz it isn't a solid axle?? WHO CARES?! No pumpkin to get hung up, more clearance!

2 things P that hold people back, ok initial price maybe makes 3.

But traxxas, and the fact it's not a kit. There are many who cannot stand traxxas anything, and many who won't buy a RTR anything.

A steep initial price, the traxxas name and only RTR have been mentioned time and time again. The solid axle thing only gets mentioned after the others usually.

Guys like to build, and setup rides thier own way. And complain about how the R/C hobby has become RTR everything. And they blame a good part of that on traxxas. Right or wrong, they do.

If traxxas made some kits the ''hardcore'' r/c'er would be more accepting, but a RTR only company lineup has some people fuming.

Me, I like R/C anything, I've got a pede 4x4 and a 2wd.

If traxxas would do a kit, or solid axle anything hardcore guys would leap. But traxxas has the ''fastest in radio control'' slogan which basicly eliminates a solid axle ride.

I drove the summit not too long ago and love it! I'd love to own one...for me, price is an issue although I really think its reasonable considering what ya get and its capabilities. I also would prefer to build it myself but currently own two RTR's, LOL...I've built enough kits in my day to know what I've missed and its something I'll just have to get over ;).

You guys know what would be just awesome? Traxxas coming out with a solid axle modifiable crawler truck. They never have. Its all they have left to do really isn't it? Other than a dragster or a 1/4 scale.. I wonder why they haven't? I can smell it coming around the corner... I'm gonna start saving now lol..

I own 2 Summits, well "owned" is more accurate. I converted one over to an E-Revo with Summit CVDs and a rear locking diff. Summits are great bashers but they have to make so much compromises to both crawl and go fast that they are not great at either. To crawl the suspension has to be setup soft which compromises handling when going fast. And the balanced chassis, independent suspension, and low gear that is too high means it can't crawl very well either. My biggest thing is I wish they had made the spread between low gear and high gear greater.

It's really hard to please everyone..

But, I do love the summit. I really can't complain about it at all. I wouldn't want the low gear any lower!

I'm more of a RC gadget guy than a hardcore crawler or racer so it's different for me.

The other day I jumped in my sons wagon and towed myself around (after I pulled him). I'm 180 lbs!

I drove through a crap load of water, climbed a bunch of snow piles then ramped it off my air conditioner multiple times after I crawled up a make shift board (needed diffs locked). None of my other trucks could do that.

I also have never turned a screw or sprayed WD40 on anything after water use. I just neglect it, and love it.

Hawn I just have to disagree- and it is worth noting that most people agree with you- I got served in another forum left and right by people saying the Summit is not a good crawler.. CRAZY. I have got to learn how to a make a video. The Summit is an amazingly capable crawler- what is most certainly isn't, is a competition crawler.

It's not that I don't like Summits, there's a reason I picked up two of them. I consider the Summit an excellent trail rig but there's no way it's in the same league as a dedicated crawler when it comes to crawling. Sure it's big tires and gobs of power will get it through places most rcs couldn't but when it comes to just crawling the Summit is just mediocre. And that's not to say Traxxas screwed up. It's impossible to mix both high speed handling and low speed crawling into one platform. Even Axial's new Wraith had to make compromises but it's still heavily biased towards crawling.

It just costs too much for me. I would have seriously considered it if it was offered as a kit or assembled with no motors, batteries, and electronics. It would be so much cheaper as a roller, and I have tons of electronics already. I have an NIB 1/8th brushless combo staring me in the face right now. I hate paying extra for gear I don't need, and don't want to be bothered with selling.

I do have a Summit tranny, though. I love those things.

The price is most certainly up there.. I cannot think of a truck off the top of my head that is more expensive- perhaps another Traxxas like the Erevo- I must say I really feel I got my money's worth with this purchase-

I believe you and I agree:tmb. There certainly is no other truck like it on the market. You can put it on the rocks, take it out on the trails, and then take it to the beach and go all out. All the other trucks in or near this price are just go fast trucks designed for 4S or 6S power.
