me personally id give it more power then that. but then again ive never messed around with those blackwell axles so not sure how much power they'll take

why not go with one of the leopard BL systems, they're under 75.00 complete motor and ESC
More than enough to turn the tires on this as long as you don't gear for 100mph

I was looking at those too, just didnt know which KV to go with...

That would work...I thought the "finned" motors werent really 540 cans tho?

The Castle type ESC is small enough for me to hide the way I want to....That Leopard ESC looks small too....and its Orange lol :cool

They are not true 540 motors. They are 380 arms stuck in a 540 sized can. They will lack torque compared to a true 540 sized motor, however I have had good luck with those finned motors in most any application I've ran them in from 2wd sct's to my WK projects. Your project looks like its going to be really heavy so that might make me think twice about using one of those.

I see there is a castle 3800 4 pole set up for sale over on Clod Talk. That would move it along!

Gavyn, don't use a high kv brushless in an R2, the gears won't hold up being spun that fast. The gearing in the Blackwells is pretty low too, 3.75:1. So even if you use the biggest pinion possible in it, a 20t which makes the trans ratio 10:1, the best final drive ratio you'll get is 37.5:1 which is pretty slow. I think your idea of trying the Axial 20T motor is a good one to start off with. But there is also the option of trying the direct drive R2 trans (1:1 ratio) then you can use a smaller pinion and maybe a 17.5 brushless.

this is a single 380-in-a-540 finned can motor in a heavy New Era TXT and it goes very well

I was thinking about that setup too, but I wasnt sure if it was gonna work or not....wasnt sure if it would have the torque and speed combo I needed. The Truck is bigger than it looks and will be decently heavy.

Good info Kent...my original idea was an Axial 20t or 27t brushed motor and somewhere between a 15t-20t pinion...Any recommendations on a pinion if I did the brushed setup?

It does move really good Bill, Ill do sum more research

Go with the biggest pinion that will fit, which is the 20t. I've never tried an R2 with that big a pinion but RC4WD says it'll fit. To bad too because I just traded my only R2 away a couple of weeks ago, or I would've tried it out. But like I said, the R2 is geared really low so you'll want to counter that with a big pinion. I'm guessing the 20T motor with the 20t pinion will still be slower than a stock clod though.

don't they make a wide gear set for the R2?
If so jump on it, because from what I remember the gears were thin and not the most rugged looking

I know the R2 HD has wider gears, not sure if there's a wider gear set for the regular R2 though.

He actually has the HD R2 tranny. Look at the pic in post #41.
Yeah, your right!

Still not sure about spinning that thing up with crazy brushless speeds. Also if you stick with this trans there's no need to get a 4-pole motor, in fact those 380 sized finned motors should do just fine because of the gear reduction creating torque.

Yea sorry I guys I think I forgot to mention it was the HD R2 tranny....so do u think the one Tom posted work work with a 20t pinion?
