Transmission Rebuild

Guess What?

Axial AX-10 Transmissions dont like big power!

So, taking no chances, I invested in steel gears and an alloy case.

No issues since bolting it all back together!

Wow is it quick!!!

I had some cheap no-name alloy upper link mounts that flexed like they were made out of rubber. So I replaced them with these. The build quality was immediately obvious when I openned the package.

Also threw on a green alloy battery mount. Because it was next to FREE on ebay!

Ive had some close calls nearly running into big stuff that would destroy expensive steering servos... so I added a bit of insurance overkill!

First real outside run in freezing weather was amazing! I love it! It tips a bit, but the weight of the Clodbuster wheelset keeps the rubber side down!

Omega Chasis Re-Think

As proud of my Omega Chasis idea as I am, I decided last night to tear it down and revert back to a semi-stock set up for Scorpions.

Why? I wanted to see how handling and performance would be effected by the lower C of G.

I dug out one of my old Pro-Line Frame Extentions (again) for the Electronics.

I was concerned that the body would rub the tires, but the Integy Internal Spring Shocks with FIRM Springs and 80 Weight Oil. Well, it doesnt even come close!

Handles a lot better and seems 'quicker' for some reason?

I cant believe just lowering something as light as the body, and removing the upsidedown chasis plates would make such a difference?!

I even think it looks good this way. Not so much like a HUGE Clodbuster anymore, but still cool!

The body is a couple of inches lower now...

Maybe it looks more 'scale' to a real Monster Truck?

Front Driveshaft popped off on first outdoors drive, so Im going to throw on some alloy end caps.

Updates!

No action photos yet... I'll see if I can get some snow shots of it next week!

So I decided it needed to get BIGGER!

I bought a Hot-Racing Frame Kit!

Chasis is long enough to run two AX-10 style battery mounts. One will have the Electronics on it. I need to get another green alloy mount from Integy! Its got to match you know!

Coming together, everything fits well... Just trying to figure out how I want the suspension, etc.

I kept the side body mounts because thats how my stock Scorpion body fits... I think it needs to be raised up a bit. The kit included traditional top body mounts I will try later...

Here is a shot or two of the top body mounts...

Wheel base is about 13.75. I think it might need to be brought in a bit to look better.

Here is the body resting on top of the new body mounts.

And, an Atomik Camo Body left over from my Clodzilla project!

I also added 'rear steering', then locked it out. I did this so I could install a WIDE kit that requires a front axle set up to be used. I have however found that my lock out links are fragile. I may put it all back to a stock solid axle set up.

Also, my new Electronics still seem to move this beast along quite well!

I've been keeping an eye on this thread, and this thing definitely is, a MONSTER. You've taken it from one thing, and transformed it into something completely different. Very cool rig bro

Thanks guys!

Its been a very fun project! As of today (Christmas Day), Ive been into RC's for one year!

The Camo Body is a beater... Its what Im going to use to fine tune the ride height. Definitely set it down a bit, get the stance right.

Then, I just might consider a custom painted body...

I think your going to want some flexible body posts. As big as it is it's heavy and if it takes a tumble the rotating mass of clod wheels and everything you'll bend or break the aluminum posts or what they are attatched to.

Like that chassis though, really opens up some options for you on such a custom (and cool) build. :tmb

Thank you William!

I will certainly take your advice into consideration!

Its funny how Clod like it has become.

If I hadnt bought such expensive driveshafts, the MIP CVD's, Id figure out some sort of longer swap, so I could really stretch the wheel base out. Maybe run one of those 1/6th scale Chevy bodys with all the scale detail. If I could ever find one!

I guess I could always swap over to Clod axles! Then nothing would be left of the original AX-10!

:)

My suspension had a lot of 'slop' in it with this new frame kit.

The answer? Take off my 3-Link and swap in a new 4-Link system!

I used Traxxas pre-made links as they were the perfect length!

Suspension is TIGHT!

Why didnt I ever think of running 4-Link before?!
