I loved the idea of putting that extra chassis on top of the stock one. That was a cool idea. I think it looks great. Nice job! It seems I never quit buying upgrades for my trucks.

That STRC skid looks pretty sweet.
I'm kinda taking mine in a comp-ready direction, so I'd probably opt for one made from Delrin.

Are those links Integy?
I like how the eyelet is machined. Screw-on ends can be such a pain to get them on straight and tight.
I'm just not real keen on Integy's quality of aluminum, I'm gonna look into them further before I buy 'em. How do you feel about them?

Thanks for the chasis comments! I tried to stack a third on top this afternoon to get another inch plus lift, but it was 'a bridge too far...' So I tore it all back off. :)

They are Integy lower links, yes. 129mm. The design is why I bought them... They just look so much cleaner than any others on the market.

So far, they seem to be holding up well, now, Im only crawling over wood piles and the occasional large smooth rocks. Hope that helps you make your decision!

Gotta say crawlers are not my thing (to slow lol) but your build has got my interest since you didnt start out going for a crawler I like the going for a clod look and now im kinda considering this sometime down the road (plate is way to full for another rig!). Anyway very nice build so far, kinda like the first tires vs the clod tires tho, looks so narrow compared to the other way but I like the wide look :willy:tmb

Thanks!

Well... It may be the way it looks in photos... In person, its almost comical how much it looks like a 'real' Monster Truck. Almost a scale build, without the fake engine and tube chasis.

The earlier wheel and tire set up I had on it didnt quite have the Monster Truck look right... I think because the Mashers are 'too thin' looking to give it a touch of realism.

I put those on my Clodzilla and it was immediately faster! Since the Clod wheel and tire set up was just sitting there, it was crying out to be tried on the Axial. I had the correct adaptors, so on it went! It was love at first sight! I remember laughing out loud once I stood back and really looked at it.

Here is the WEIRD thing... No, not me laughing at my RC truck... but it instantly climbed way way way better with the Clod tires! Now I know Mashers are not a climbing tire, but since I discovered that AX-10's dont take a hard bashing session very well... and decided to go the crawler route with it, the Clod tires were massively better. They really claw the rocks and wood pile, and conform nicely to whatever they are conquering!

Now with the 55t Integy motor, and the 20t gear back in... its still reasonably quick enough to get from crawl spot A to crawl spot B in the back yard, and crawls with a lot more torque!

I am pleased with it. Although I know full well it will never excel at crawling like some other purpose built rigs. And Im fine with that. Im enjoying turning it into a polished brick of alloy... A shelf queen that actually has some climbing ability!

Its been a real fun project! Especially as I started out as a complete newbie to this hobby Christmas 2008 with a New Bright Land Rover!!!

For review: Clod on the left / AX-10 on the right

Clod tires are kool for sure to bad you couldnt maybe have some widners for it. Me id slap my set of losi claws on it right away to see how those look! :tmb

Ive thought of making it wider. The adaptors I have on it are 1 inch. I think going to a 1.5 inch adaptor would be a good idea. I need to do some research and see if the kind I have are available in different sizes?

I'll have to take a look at your suggested tires! Im not familiar with them? I used the Clods because it was a brand new wheel and tire set that had only been used on my Clod to build it up. Maybe one battery 'break in' easy run. Otherwise I probably would have used some tire from IMEX. They make some amazing looking tires!

New Suspension!

I cant believe I havent updated anything in three months?!

I decided big power is going to destroy my stock plastic shocks, so I picked up these lovely internal spring shocks today from Integy!

Medium Springs on 3 corners, and 1 Hard Spring in the back left corner to combat torque twist.

Running 80 weight shock oil.

It drives solid, and now needs the power to fully use this new suspension set up!

These were a good value in my opinion at Hobbytown for less than $55.

Still have to love this build. Simple, yet very effective.

Lipo and a 3xxx KV motor for the torque would be perfect to increase speed, but not be crazy overkill. A lighter lipo battery upgrade alone will help with CG and overall performance.

Thank you!

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions!

I havent yet made the jump to Brushless or Lipo!

I fully plan on moving to Lipo for the weight advantages / C of G / and run times.

And CPH... Id like to try a Brushless system as you suggest. Especially since these Axials only have one motor.

William, is there a particular company/product you've used that you would suggest for the set up you mentioned?

Im thinking nothing too supersonic... I really want this to be a 'modern day Clodbuster', and would like to run it with fast Clod's.

I noticed after driving it in the house last night, that the shock shafts have some oil on them. Hmmm.... I hope Im not looking at warranty issues!

RiZZa, I have also wondered about swaybars! I have a set from an old Clodzilla project I had, but Im not too sure how I would get them to work? I'll have to give it some thought...

I say check out a EZ-Run Hobbywing 60Amp ESC and around 3000kv-3500kv motor. The EZ-Run ESC has a program card/box that you can program or adjust to get the throttle setup you want.

Hobbywing has a motor in that range, (13.5t) as well as the Traxxas vxl motor is a 3500kv

If you go with everything from Hobbywing you might be able to find one under 100 bucks even.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I picked up some new parts yesterday...

Install was easy, but does anyone else have any 'rounding off' issues with allen wrenches?!

Decided to tear down and reroute a few things, clean up my 'OMEGA CHASIS' a bit, add some more suppport, etc.

I think this gives a good look at the support structure. I added one more Axial link across the upper chasis plates since this photo last night...

I spent quite a bit of time at the local 'old school' hobby shop talking with the resident crawling expert about powertrain options.

I had hoped to make this as fast as a stock Traxxas E-Maxx, but he had some concerns about survivability of components and the transmission.

I see on ebay a few 'Low Center of Gravity Transmissions' with all steel gears, alloy body, etc.

Or I could rebuild my stock Transmission with heavy duty parts.

This is why I decided to BEEF up my drive axles! These MIP CVD's must weight a pound each!

Maybe I will downgrade my speed goal to that of a well built Clodbuster???

Power!

I finally sold enough on ebay to justify biting off a chunk at the local hobby store today!

I didnt spend as much as I could have, in fact; I showed great restraint! Ha!

What I did end up with is this...

1. Tekin FX-R
2. Speed Gems Pro Titanite 15t
3. 12 tooth pinion gear
4. LiPo Battery 2C - 5000 - 30C Burst (My first LiPo!)
5. Passport LiPo Charger
6. 3 Racing 10mm Wide Outer Join

Put it all together tonight. My first LiPo remember! Ive never even so much as driven an RC with LiPo!

I went with a smaller pinion gear than the stock 14 tooth to make sure things kept cool...

Jaw dropping! Ive only driven it in the house so far, and lets just say its DANGEROUS!

Ha ha! Its so quick! I cant even believe it! Who knows how fast it is on top, but its way too quick for indoor action.

Reality Check: The stock controller no longer cuts the mustard. Its not even possible to fully control this beast! Time to step up to some new technology!

Inspiration!

I dont know who owns this... But this Monster Truck is the single greatest inspiration for my 'SCORPION KING' project truck!

Others have inspired me as well from this site, but this one in particular, just captured my imagination!

So, to whoever owns this rig, Thank you!
