Repairing/finishing hard shells for newbies?

I'm considering sanding/filling/whatever a Blackfoot shell, but I have no idea where to start. I've never tried this before.

go to the library, sign out a book on 1:1 body work, the basics of everything you need are there.
Then, see if they have a modeling book, that'll help if you want to get into mods, and plastic welding sections and or panels
