Project crawler: Brass Knuckles

Yeah, it's been a while. Last thing I did was install a TTR straight axle CVD on my Tremor roller...:bang

So anyway, my rock garden got a huge donation from a friend, so I need to build a crawler! After gathering all of my clod and misc. RC stuff together, I started research on here and a crawler forum. I found the chassis I wanted (been wanting a tuber for a long time), a RCP Hustler, but it is a hard one to get a hold of. After checking the site for over a week, I snagged one. I also had a paint scheme in mind, using a brass knuckle keychain for a stencile.

I also wanted steel weights made for the inside of the stock knuckles. Well, when I got them back, my machinist friend had made them out of brass, because brass weighs more. He had no idea of the brass knuckle paint scheme, so this build is starting off on the right foot (except for the fact that I didn't know the hole needed to be tapered)!

Stay tuned, I've got more goodies coming next week! :tmb

Very neat looking chassis. Did it come with links and rod ends too? And are those panels made of lexan or fiberglass or what?

What color are you doing the frame? or are you leaving it natural?

Thanks. The chassis comes with all the links, shock and axle mounts, and the panels are clear lexan (they still have the overspray cover on).

Not sure yet on what color. The panels are going to be flat black with a gloss knuckle on 3 panels.

Just a little update. Got some stuff, and still need some stuff to really make progress. I have Integy axle tubes coming, and that is holding everything up. Those ProLine beadlocks are fun to assemble. :ack I also modified Ofna Titan shocks for droop suspension with internal springs that came with the chassis. I either want to polish the links, or scotchbrite them, leaning towards polish to match the axles.
Speaking of which, the Integy gear cases are nice, but not show pieces. I don't know what kind of plating is on them, but is not the best I've seen (missing in the nooks and crannys, and just looks cheap).

The mess, so far:

And my corner space (notice the 2 abandoned chassis):

I don't think the Integy cases are plated. I read they are polished aluminum.

What is that abandoned tuber? A ECD?

Thanks!
Kenny, that abandoned "tuber" on the floor? That is my Tremor. I want to build that up with my other axles eventually (I can't part with it, just a cool looking truck), and I still want to build a Clod with my modified version of your chassis with the Savage shocks.

Oh yeah, about the Integy gearboxes being polished, I really don't think so. They look like "chrome" plastic model parts. There is a blemish on mine that is a dead give-away, I'll try to get a good pic of it.

How much did they cost? I need new cases for my project too... Where did you find them?

I think those ones are the cast aluminum. Either way your truck is going to look awesome. Keep up the great work and keep posting the pics.

Did you get those tubes yet? Curious what the hole size is for the kingpins, I use GPM knuckles so kinda wondering how its work. Also think those will be good for a basher or stick with stock?

No tubes yet. I am waiting on them to finish my axles. :bang

As for the gearboxes, here is a decent pic showing the quality of the plating, or lack there of:

The tubes came! :willy The kingpin holes on the Integys are .245", stock is .205", and the kingpin shoulder is .195". I am making bushings for a nice fit.
Stock setup weighs in at 13oz, alum setup with brass weights comes in at a hefty 31oz!

Made real progress today.
-Found out I need wideners to run the Moab XLs.
-The shocks need more travel and shorter when compressed.
-The Aggressor steering needed a minor mod concerning the hardware.
-The links got a creative mount that only the Integy tubes could provide.

Other then that, all I need is the rear steering setup, and I'll be ready for electrics! Here is a mock-up poser shot:

That looks really kool man! Whats the creative link mount?
I used one of the four screws that connects the "C" to the tube. Not really that creative, but I was running into a few clearance problems. I got the motors installed with adjustable mounts and 9t pinions, and they are really close to the shock mount screws on the links. Honestly though, all of these issues is what makes the build fun.:willy
