Well the first thing is to replace the bushings with bearings. That make a huge a difference. Ive also found a very light coat of grease on the gears works the best. It lets the gears spin much more freely.

this is a very good thing to do to help keep gears smooth i have stripped 6 sets of gearbox idler gears before i started bracing from getting deformed in my usa-1 the gearbox mod below is the best mod done by BBeaty

Due to soft plastic used for the A-1 gearboxes the plastic can deform at the motor mount screws causing the gearmesh to change and strip idler gears. Below is a picture of the aluminum plates I had water jetted in order to keep the gearboxes from deforming, which can lead to toasted idler gears.

(Please send me a PM if anyone wants the CAD file for these plates)

Hey guys,
I finally got some time to work on my project truck. It started awhile back when I bought some team tweaked chassis plates. But I didn?t want to build another clod truck, no I wanted something different. So I decided on building another custom usa-1 truck. Heres what I have so far

I?ve also started working on new driveshafts. I decided to use different steering blocks. These are from a 4x4 slash. I modified them a little and got them to work. I plan on using some clod wheels with stampede wheels glued in them to get the proper width. The cool part about using these steering blocks is that I can probably use the aluminum versions of them as well.

I like the traxxas steering blocks. What wheels could we use? What i like about the diiferent steering block is it will use the traxxas slider and axles and you could just adjust arm length to make it work.

Well I really like those steering blocks since there available in aluminum as well. The wheels I was going to use were clod wheels with 2.2 stampede wheels glued in them to get the proper offset. This projects been on hold for awhile. I've got a killer idea for the suspension but its complicated to build and get to work lol

I i dont like the glued in wheel thing seems like alot of extra weight and such. maybe a wheel with a diiferent off set like the usa-1 nitro or losi lst or something like that. when i strat to think about all the different ways to do it i think just get the whole set up from the bulk head out to the wheels just find a rig the had arms that ar close enough to mod up. then you have to find a workable wheel, get some outdrives that will work with whatever driveline you end up using (maybe the thorp daouble dare ones or have mike hesse make us some like the sassy universals) i think its the simplest way to and probably cheapest just ebay the stuff....
Have you got some traxxas arms to mock up?

i have used the most combinations of tires and rims on a USA-1 of anybody i have ever known it not hard sassy spliend ends make it fair easy ... to me i dont see any truck out there that would be that easy to adapt to usa-1 do to the way usa-1 upper arms mount to gearbox the sassy option was good to me for upper arms ..

Yeah I'm not overly crazy about the wheels either but I've got the parts to make them so I'm think that's what I'm going to use. Best option might me a ofna monster pirate wheel due to it's offset.

As for the traxxas I did awhile back try to get a rear stampede arm to work with a USA -1 gearbox. It didnt line up very well and to actually put it on the gear box the necessary mod s would weaken the arm to much.

the upper arm can be just a tie rod or toe link type.

I made some killer progress on the tweaked a-1 today. It looks like my suspension idea is going to work great. I really want to post some pics of it, but i think it will be done in the next few weeks so il wait till its more together before i post a pic. I gotta order a bunch of parts tonite for it.

I ordered a bunch of parts for the a-1 tonight so maybe by this weekend I'll have some pics to post. I'm so excited about this truck.

Well im finally ready to show off some more of my project. I built this suspension so that the gear box would have no strain on it. All the gear box has to do now is spin the driveshafts.

very very interesting i don't know what i think of it yet will wait and see what the rest of the mad scientist of usa-1 comes up with =)

The mad scientist of usa-1, that sounds about right lol. I feel like im building a rc frankenstien lol.

Im not a 100% sure what to think of it yet myself. I mean in my head its going to work great, however i want really know untill I run it. Its so unique, so I dont have anything to go by in terms of its performance when its done.

yeah you remind me of reumaster i wish he was still on this forum he had TONS ! of ideas he never got around to on the usa-1 .. he was the creator of usa-1 owners unite website and he created the usa-1 sassy axles upper and lower a-arms and one piece hinge pins and several other things him and Marcus came up with i have forgotten over the years ...

I really appreciate that Dom. I wish he was still around i would love to have seen his work. You and bbeaty have been huge in inspiring me to work on a-1s.
I think the usa-1 still has soom room for different ideas to be explored. To me the clod has been just about been maxed out.
