Pinion question

I've always ran the stock size 13t pinions, but with my dual Stinger 20 turns and EVX2 esc on a 5000 8.4 batt, it seems like it tops out and holds back from what it could do. Who has ran 15t pinions in a Clod with more tame type motors like this, or say dual 17 turns? Did it heat up, no take off, etc.

I don't care about wheelies, but don't wanna be a pig off the line either. I'm thinking the 15 pinion should be ok, but would like those that have ran them to chime in! I want a little more mid-top range!

Hey Nitro,

I run the Traxxas EVX-2 Waterproof esc, Traxxas Titan 550's, dual 5000 NiMh packs, stock Tamiya nylon gears with spool gear and Traxxas 15T (#3945) steel pinions in my Snow Clod. This combination works really well in snow, mud and off road loose dirt. I have had great success with Traxxas pinions in everything I've built since they are machined steel. I don't particularly care for Tamiya or Robinson racing pinions. Hope this helps.

Do the 15 tooth pinions need different motor mounts or do they fit without any problems? Sorry to thread jack, Im just trying to figure out my truck aswell.

Yeah, they will require adjustable motor mounts! I'm not looking for which pinions to run as far as strength, just need to know the performance of 15t's in my setup. Thanks for the info seadoo

Higher number teeth will go faster but will heat up more and less run time. Lower teeth is better for faster motors faster acceleration more power longer run time and cool temps.

You can run 15T pinions on a Clod by removing both brass shims in the gearcase. That should give you just enough room for the pinion without needing adjustable mounts.

The 15t pinions and the 2 Titan motors makes it a quick running truck for a Clod. A 15t pinion will fit a stock Clod gear case without using an adjustable motor mount, removing the metal gear case sleeves or hollowing out the round gear case hole. The cutoff if I remember correctly is a 16t or 17t pinion before you need an adjustable motor mount and/or make the round hole in the gear case bigger.
