Six versions. I have one and never instaled it. It will render Your monitors below HD quality if it and\or the video card isn't HDCP compliant. Yep, it won't output video in HD otherwise. You will have to replace your monitor and video card which is pretty much 90% of evertything out there.

Lots of devices, like wireless routers, and other peripherals are incompatible. P2P software won't work unless you know how to get around it. I could go on and on. Basically, you will end up like this guy to the right: :bang

Yeah, as an IT administrator for several small businesses, we have taken the policy of "RUN AWAY". There are tons of programs that are not Vista compatible, and to get the Vista compatible version you have to purchase it. There are no patches or free downloads. Hardware is a little better as all you need is the latest drivers, which most major manufactures have made available for free download.

Another big problem is the system requirements. Most people think their current system is ok since it is running XP, but in reality it falls short or just barely meets the min. requirements.

Eventually everyone will go to Vista, just like everyone went to XP and the XP SP2. I would just say wait 6 months to a year before you go out and purchase it.

Versions:
-Home Basic
-Home Premium
-Business
-Ultimate

there is 32 and 64 bit versions too

I know if your just upgrading to upgrade waiting is better, but if you buy a new pc...

I'm interested in peoples thoughts. Personaly the IE7 part is my personal ugh. I like IE6 better, I had to ghost my xp because I couldn't stand IE7. Even though I do use mozilla firefox the IE7 layout irks me. Back, refresh, all the tool/surf buttons gone

What's the difference, really? Buy Vista with a new system now, and that system hardware is obsolete in a few years anyway. Intel and AMD keep changing CPUs and chipsets. Remember how many years people kept using 98 when XP was released? Businesses still use 95, 98, and ME. A few use XP. I'm in no rush. Lots of new PCs and notebooks are being purchased with the request of XP installed. My brother has Vista in his Vaio; It's pretty, and it's a resource hog. Don't even think about running it with less than 1GB of memory.

I bought a $600 gateway in feb.

specs:
2.0ghz AMD turion
1gb Ram
Geforce 6150 go
120 GB hard drive (the reason I bought it)
windows vista Pro

I thoroughly hate it. it's a memory hog worse than XP and norton combined and it ends up getting mucked up almost as fast as ME.

it is pretty, but the secutrity add ons are annoying...

perhaps the only positive is it has media center... but that useless on a laptop

I plan on downgrading next week it sp2... I cant stand the vista bugs

Supreme Reign -- Your statement about HD is not entire accurate. There is nothing stopping maximal resolution while using the computer with or without HDCP displays/video cards. If you were to to play Blueray OR HDDVD content, on non HDCP hardware then it will downgrade video resolution. To be compliant with Blueray or HD DVD ALL devices have to do this. Currently, the flag is off for HD DVD (it's not enforced)...I don't know what the status is with Blueray...

I run my rig with Vista Ultimate on a now (sadly) aging Athlon 165 Dualcore overclocked to 2.65ghz with 2 gigs of ram for my day to day computer use (which is embarrassingly high). I DO have a high end video card (Nvidia 7950 GX2) and all components were handpicked. Stability has been good. Speed has been good. Compatibility has been good.

Took me a while to find a look that I really liked....most stuff can be turned off to make it feel more like XP.

My machine is on day in and day out around the clock and has been rock solid.

I dunno..it's start to grow on me...

I figured I would wait for the first service pack before upgrading. I will also just turn off all the 3d interface stuff. I even turned off all the colorful XP stuff. I you walked in and looked at my screen right now you wouldn't be able to tell if I running XP or 98. Pretty is good, functional is better.

As for using Mac or Linux, I would love to, but I am a gamer. And 99% of all games are made for Windows, so I am stuck. I know there are emulators and compatibility layers like Boot Camp and Wine, but it just doesn't seem worth it.

See this is why one of the 10 million things and reasons why newer is not always better. LOL. Want the best OS? Go Linux, it's free and real stable and maybe even the future of OS's. I personally run WinXP Home Edition with SP1 and don't really plan to upgrade as my printer and all I have work perfectly fine with it.

Alot of that has to do with the fact that Mac runs on UNIX. That is why Mac is so "stable". Its a GUI interface of UNIX. And Linux is just a light version of UNIX.

Rule of thumb with desktop vs laptop. Unless you need to be portable, buy a desktop. Laptops are always more expensive and you never get as good as components as you do in desktops.

Research brands!!! If you look at sites and magazines that compair stuff, like Consumer Reports, CNET, etc. You will find HP and Compaq rank as the worse computer makers. They make great printers, but crappy PCs. Gateway has gotten better, but when they got bought out by eMachines, I put them on the "Do not buy" list. This is what I suggest to clients and friends:

Laptop: Toshiba or Dell (look it up)
Desktop: Dell, Gateway or build your own (not as hard as you might think)
OS: Windows XP Pro or Home depending on your needs.

OR

iBook if you like Macs (G5s are just way too blood expensive)

I I had money I would build my own, I do it for other people, and repairs. The one I'm on now is a Sony case, but the guts have been built by me way back. I like it, but it's older. A top notch machine in it's day, a media center pc before they became popular. Dual DVD burners, TV tuner and capture, remote control and other media junk.

The laptop arrives Thursday and it'll only really cost me nothing but time. I can't pass that up now can I?

I have to scan photo albums to DVD, not hard just time consuming.

I have a guy buying my desktop and I get his older desktop in trade. So all in all I shouldn't be out any money except for I plan on purchasing more RAM for it. Has 1 gig, want 2.

As for a mac, no way no how. I have plenty of good software here for pc's, and macs crash just like any other machine. I just had to reinstall tiger on one this am. :willy Besides I don't like the OS system layouts nor the attitude of many mac people. A computer makes nobody superior. :willy

Gateway, no I think they've fallen behind big time. Dell is best overall, (imho) but right now the HP dv9000 series are getting excellent reviews and that's what's comming to me. I will keep the older desktop I get in trade as a spare machine, and or donate it to somebody who needs it localy.

I just wanted to hear opinion of Vista owners, and what they had.

Believe me, I'd do dos and win 3.1 if it was feasable, I liked it. :tong

I'd take gateway over dell any day... especially when it comes to desktops, dell uses proprietary parts.

now I did have a dell LCD at one time, and loved it... would definitely recommend dell lcd's

Yeah...exactly what CAD or FEA software that is most commonly used in industry today works on a Mac, hmmmm?

Ideas - no.

Pro E/Pro M - no.

Solidworks - no.

Cosmos - no.

Ansys - no.

Basically, there are no CAD or FEA programs that will work on a Mac.

Sorry Mac guys, but not not everyone is a liberal arts major. ;)

Just kidding, but seriously, I get tired of people cramming their fruity computers down other people's throats when they have no clue what software those other people need to run on their machines.

As for laptops, I have a Dell Precision M90 and I *love* it. It's powerful enough to run Solidworks and it's pretty durable. It's huge and heavy though, which makes it a pain to carry around on the road. I also got it for free from work, so that's the biggest plus factor for it! :D

Why do I have this image of Electro in some underwater lair ready to take over the world, looking something like the underwater relay station on lost. A bunch of fish dead under it from Pantara blasting at 3000 watts? :rof

oh, a tank like turret on top incase a sub comes near :wnk
