OT: My "new" ride

I had been looking for something cost efficient to drive around while I park my saab for the work that it needs done, and I came across this beauty here:

1982 Chevy Chevette Diesel :D. $600 for the car and a spare engine and tranny. I just have to finish up the head gasket job that the guy started. Its a 1.8 liter Isuzu diesel backed with a 5spd manual trans. The thing is in great shape. I'll get some better pictures up once I find my camera.

Im going to guess 101k since the odo has rolled over. I highly doubt that its got 1k original miles :willy. that would be pretty cool though if it did lol

Was that engine swapped in or was it original? I know several of the older smaller cars had weird combinations...

Its the original diesel engine that came with the car as far as I know anyway. It was a factory diesel though, it has a bunch of diesel badges on it and in the interior.

Chevettes are cool! My neighbor had a diesel vette back in the day and it would never start on cold mornings. That car made a real impression on me as far as diesels were concerned that took a LONG time to change that view.

I remember it was either Hot Rod or Popular Hot Rodding that did a budget Chevette build. They stuffed a junkyard Cadillac 472 in a 'Vette and took her to the strip. The thing looked like a pile but (if I remember correctly) ran low 13's with the stock tires and stock open rear diff.

Your car looks real clean...nice find!

great find
Those were a blast to beat the snot out of.

Word of caution though, when you cut the roof off to make a convertable the doors no longer open :rof. The floor is sealed well to so drill some holes so when it rains for the water can drain.

Oh, wait you bought it to be a daily driver :tong

Should wind up around 45-50 mpg if the engine is strong, even a dead one is good for over 35mpg :chev

Nah, that would defeat the purpose for which it was bought lol. Started working on it today to find that my cam bearings are pretty much toast. I have the spare engine coming up here on saturday, so Im going to get that one ready to run and swap them out. Then I'll rebuild this one.
