ordered my Hilux

Hello everyone,
I am returning to this forum after a several year hiatus. I got sidetracked in RC airplanes for a while but am now getting back into the R/C truck game.
I have owned a dozen or so Clods over the years- including thundertech rippers, ESP clods, New Era Tubers, etc. I guess when I saw these Tamiya 3 speeds re-introduced, I could not resist.

Anyways, I will get to the point of this post. I ordered the Hilux today from Tower. They price matched Ultimate Hobbies, so I am getting it for $339. That definately beats my LHS-- they want $419 and would not budge on price. I am all about supporting the local stores, but not when it results in a $80 price difference.

So, what do you all suggest for modding this hilux? I was thinking bigger tires/wheels and maybe a lift kit (if I need one). From what I read here, the body sits pretty high so I might not need a lift kit. Which 2.2 tires and wheels fit directly and which look the best?

I will post pics as I get the model and start assembling it.

Oh, and one more thing. I don't want to damage this beautiful body, so I will put a lexan one for driving around. How do I mount a lexan body on these?

I checked out your build as you suggested. Looks really nice with those wheels/tires. I plan on picking up the same rims for mine, but will probably go with some different tires, I just haven't decided which- maybe the HPI yokohama geolanders or the proline moab. Will these tires fit the Junfac rims?

Thanks for the info on the lift kit (not needing it), that saves me the $180 for a Junfac chassis.

The moabs are taller and rounder than the Geolandars. Both look cool. I like the Geolandar a bit more though... I saw a pic of one with Geolandar tires on it somewhere I'll see if I can find it

So it looks as if Ultimate Hobbies has the best price of anyone on the net for this model?

Or are there any other secret places offering it this low?

i bought mine at ultimate and got free shipping , rpp charges like 8 or 9 bucks. plus my kit came in the mail in 5 days. i did also order my swamp dawg tires from rpp and they got here in about the same time, ether or is a good place to buy from. and jun fac took about 7 - 8 days for the wheels.

As mentioned above, tower matched the prices from Ultimate, but they would not give free shipping. I ended up paying $8. I chose to order from tower anyways, because it only usually takes 1-2 days to arrive from Illinois to Wisconsin.
I have been looking around at various rims and tires. There are so many- I am having trouble deciding. I am leaning towards the Moabs and junfac beadlocks, but i am not really sure. Then, of course, I have to decide on rim colors too.

I almost always order from Tower but for this I'll give Ultimate a try.

Will stil get my tires and wheels from Tower thogh as I need other things like a Baja SS kit.

Where in WI are you? Wausau here. Buired in snow. Only thing I have been able to run is my EP Blizzard.

hpiguy,
i am in waukesha. i know exactly what you are talking about regarding the snow. I used to live in Minocqua, but moved down here last year.

I was going to order from Ultimate to save the $8, but I have off all week and wanted to work on it before I return to work after the 1st. With tower, I can always count on getting the package in 1-2 days. I am sure its the same with you, in wausau. Even when I was living in Minocqua, it only took 2 days.
