newb question need help with some answers

newb question... i know. but here is what i am looking for.

i want to do something that is different. i want to drive my truck like the real thing. i want to have a tranny that shifts to reverse and has 2 forward gears that i can manually shift as well(with 2 electric 550 sized motors). also with brakes. i am thinking a nitro t-maxx tranny would do the trick. i would like to control the brakes and throttle separately(2 triggers w/custom modded transmitter). i would like to mod both triggers to be 100% in one direction(no centering to the middle)

here are some questions i feel will help me out

- but how can i disable reverse on the electrical side?
- how do you control the brakes on a nitro truck? up on the trigger?
- how are the brakes mounted? what are they mounted to? i checked the traxxas expanded diagrams but that didn't help me.

thanks for any help.

Well you are selling one of the things you are going to want if you actually want a manual shifting transmission. Keep the EMaxx #3906 transmission and mount that up. This trans will give you the option to shift with a servo into 2nd gear or run in either gear and not shift. The TMaxx trans will shift on its own. You can lock it down on the adjustment but it will stay in one or the other gear. To have manual brakes you would have to get a ESC where you can disable brakes all together because the EVX's only have 3 profiles and they all have brakes.

To have manual brakes I do imagine you could use a front drive cup with the stock TMaxx brake hex to mount the brake disc on. Then you would have to tap the front of your trans case to accept the brake pads or make a chassis mount that came up in front of the hex to mount the pads to, then you could actually mount the pads and make the brake piston setup that is on a TMaxx trans on that mount which would probably be easier than tapping the EMaxx case because you won't have enough material to make the brake piston which compresses the pads on the disc. Then you can mount a additional servo to have independent brakes. So you would need the EMaxx trans and two additional servos. I will send you a TMaxx brake setup for you to mess around with tomorrow with your other stuff. Look here http://www.traxxas.com/PDF-Library/4910-08_tranny.pdf
You will see part #4967 this is the shaft you will have to mount into the brake pad mount, drill it down from the top then the piston is #4965 that clamps the pads to the disc. You will have to drill the front of the mount to put the piston in.

Should not be too hard really now that I am writing this.

ok now to get it to shift in reverse. i really dont like the way the reverse works with electric. i would rather the truck comes to a complete stop, then shift to reverse and pull the throttle? am i alone in this? am i the only one who wants this kind of setup? or is it just too difficult to do so no one wants to try? can i make a custom transmission to do this using e-maxx and t-maxx trannys?

BTW - i dont care if this thing ends up being huge. i am going for 1/6 scale

Well the Traxxas reverse set up is not known for it's durability so I would recommend going with a different set up if you want that type of reverse. They seem to break real easy and if you are going 1/6 scale I do not think you will have a chance of it lasting too long. That is why they started making the trucks stock with FOC's and making the reverse a option.

If my memory

serves me right Kyosho had a line of nitro trucks with reverse. Seems to me you might try digging around for info on these cause I think it's close to what your looking for.

whoa whoa whao... wait a minute. -i dont know anything really about nitro- so are you telling me that not all nitro trucks have reverse?

Well

I'd be inclined to say that the vast majority of nitro do not have reverse. Come to think of it the only ones that come to mind are the Kyosho ones. I think one of them was modeled after Snake Bite. It's 2:00 am here so I'll do a little research tomorrow night.

There is a Nitro Kyosho Snakebite truck right now for sale on the UE Forum, he only wants $80 shipped for it and he said he would take offers. It is in real nice shape too. I tried to just buy the body off of it for my Clods but he would not part with just the body. Most of the TMaxx's and Revo's have reverse, they come with the Opti-Shift mechanism so safely shift it into reverse. But many do not like the reverse just for the fact that it adds a lot of rotational mass to the trans.

the main problem i see is that youre trying to do all this with electric motors.
electric motored vehicles (ie: forklifts, scissor lifts, etc) go forward and reverse using there motors.
trying to adapt motors to work like engines to power a transmision is gonna be tough.

hey what is a drag brake? i was just reading a build thread and the guy mentioned something about wishing he had a drag brake on a cheap brushless setup.

what is a Nitro Kyosho Snakebite truck? and what is the UE Forum? by rotational mass do you mean size?? or does that have something to do with slop? i dont care much for size. it can be the size of 3 e-maxx trannys!

with the traxxas VXl you have to tap forward the trigger for brakes then release the trigger and tap it again forward for reverse. no chance of slamming into reverse from forward

Rotational mass is when you add more gears ( reverse gears ) or metal gears to a mechanism it just adds that much more weight and friction that the motor must move to get rolling. Causes your truck to be slower, especially if it is a race truck.

Kyosho Snakebite is a Monster Truck replica from way back when!!

UE Forum , Unlimited Engineering = The best parts period for a Nitro Race truck. I have a UE BB VBS Thunder and a Dace SB Predator. It is like having a Berzerker compare to a Stock Clod. A UE truck is the Berzerkers of the TMaxx's. http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/

Don't even ask how much money I have wrapped up in those two trucks.....YIKES!!! :bang But they are :shk:bling

why does that sound complicated? do you tap forward then it brakes by itself or do you control the braking? then when you tap again it is in reverse do you pull the trigger in same direction as going forward to go in reverse? or push up, tapping will just get in reverse mode?

sounds like i will just need bigger motors.

what esc's will allow me to run no brakes?
