I'm new to the forum but not new to the hobby, I'm looking into the CPE Barbarian chassis. I have a few questions maybe someone can help me. Some answers I simply cant find.

1. what shocks to use and whats a good buy for this chassis? Ive seen people run Wraith, HPI, and Traxxas rear shocks. I have a spare set of Traxxas shocks. which HPI shocks would work?

2, whats a good brushless system or motor turn? I'm looking into these Reedy 550-SL 3500kV Brushless Motor and Reedy SC800-BL Brushless ESC would this be good enough? Both are from Dollar Hobbyz

3. would a body for the tmaxx or stampede work better? (SIZE WISE)

Welcome!
Heres my awnsers

1 any shocks should work you just need to tune them right.

2 not too sure but alot of people here (including me) use the Toro/Leapord system very good for the price(mines 9T and 4700kv got it for 65bux)

3 stampede bodys are very small (1/12th scale) so use a T maxx or simalar body size.

I ended up talking to CPE on facebook last night, and he said, anything in the 3-1/2" - 4" length will work fine. So I will start looking into this. As for the bodies ill just check PROLINE.

Thanks for the help

I try to stay away from recommending certain parts like motor/escs, tires, shocks, etc. since everyone has different tastes and preferences but 3.5" shock on a Barbarian is way too short. IMO 4" shocks are also too short too. I run at least 110mm shocks on setups (mostly 120mm/5") where they are directly mounted to axle (rather than link mounted or used with cantilevers). The reason is you won't have the necessary suspension travel and/or they will be setup too stiff to have a good working suspension. When you link mount (a lot of race Clods are designed like that) or use cantilevers you not only gain leverage on the shocks and allows them to work smoother but you also gain suspension travel so they can run shorter shocks. But when they are direct mounted like on the Barbarian, all you get is whatever the travel of the shock is. So a 3.5" shock gets you maybe about and inch of travel, which is too little.

Thanks ill look into those. Ill check the length of them. I have a spare set of traxxas stampede shocks that I can see how the length goes.

The HPI Wheely King shocks are in the 120mm class. I've never used them but I have heard people say they leak a lot. I used to really like the HPI MT2 rear shocks but they were discontinued a few years ago. They were similar to the WK shocks but they ahd a metal top cap and none of the ones I had ever leaked. They were also very smooth.

Another shock that I liked even more were the original Axial AX-10 shocks that were around 120mm. None of the crawler guys liked that shock, because it was so long, so they were easy to get at a cheap price. But they have been discontinued even longer than the HPI MT2s. You can get lucky every once an while and snag one from a guy that kept. They are butter smooth because they come with nitride coated shafts from the factory.
