new to electrics

Hey everyone,
I've had Nitro trucks and buggies for years the got into Helis (most of them were nitro and gas) I've never been into electrics but a Lot has changed since I was last into land vehicles and my new neighborhood isn't noise friendly.

I recently got a Hobao Hyper MTE and a Losi LST XXL2-e. The MTE has an 150A brushless speed controller and 2000kv motor. I ran it on Onyx 5000 mah 35C packs at 6S. It was nuts! While it is an awesome truck it left me wanting something else. I've had a bunch of Losi nitro tucks and knew what to expect out of the truck chassis itself but not sure on the electrical side of it. After the first run at 5S (2S and 3S pack Both packs 5000mah and 35C) I got a thermal shut down. Packs were on the hotter side of warm that I NEVER experienced with my MTE. I talked to my LHS and they just said the onyx packs are just crappy packs. I then saw were Losi says to use a minimum of 50C (they use a 90A brushless speed controller with a 2200kv motor) The MTE has no minimum C rating listed anywhere.

So here is the question... Can I take the Speed controller off the MTE and put it on the LST XXL2-E? I have 4 35C packs and Just getting back into the hobby so any info is appreciated.

What caused the thermal shut down? Hot motor or hot esc? How hot were each...was the motor hot and the ESC cool, vise versa, or both hot?

I'm not sure about the battery quality, I'm sure there are others who will chime in. Depending on the temperatures of the components involved it might be a gearing issue. This is a general rule of thumb when it comes to gearing and temps:

Hot motor, cool controller, cool batteries = undergeared
Cool motor, hot controller, hot batteries = overgeared
Hot motor, hot ESC, and hot batteries = way overgeared
Warm motor, warm controller, warm batteries = happy components

I'll let someone else weigh in on the batteries and component swap...

Well I ran the XXL2E on 6s 35c and the batteries were just barely warm and the ESC and motor were cool to the touch. When I ran it on 5s 35C all components were hot. I could still handle them but my 3s packs are soft case and I could feel a very small amount of air (best way I can describe it) in the packs.

I went ahead and ordered some 50c packs like they recommend and I will see if I notice a difference with everything.

Yes it's a new truck, all stock. I haven't noticed any binding in the diffs or drive train gear mesh is good. Rolls freely for a good 2-3 feet if I just burp the throttle and I can hold a constant slow roll without playing with the throttle. running 6s the only thing that gets warm/hot are the batteries. Everything else is Cool, But if I go to 5s everything is HOT. I'm lost on this.

I finally got to run the 50c packs I ordered and it seems the motor and speed controller gets warmer then the batteries. My temp gun died so I didn't get an actual temp but I could hold my hand on them for a good 30 secs with no problem so I thing that's fine. I could feel some heat from the batteries but they were diffidently cooler then the rest of the stuff.

P.S. I still LOVE the way this truck runs!
