New Project (4WD Open Axle Puller)

Well, my local hobby shop is starting to do RC Pulling this fall. We already have 6 others that are building pullers. Ranging from Nitro to Electric to 2WD to 4WD. Its a RWYB/Open Class. I just started on my today. Went to the hobby shop to pickde up TLT axles and Music Wire. And this is were i need help.
I want to do a rock crawler type chassis, except really low cg, short links, and touring car shocks. Ive got a B2/B3 tranny laying around so iam gonna use that. Iam going after a 4WD Pro Stock Truck look also.

1. What chassis materials should i use? I know aluminum, but i dont know what thickness/dia.
2. How many turn motors do you guys use? i was thinking about a 12T motor. Is that too much?
3. How do you bulld the weight box on the front?
4. What should i do to the axles so they can take the abuse?

This is all the questions i have for now, but once i get more into the build, i ask! Iam also using this thread to showcase my build for other newbs that are interested in RC Pulling. Comments, questions are welcomed also. Ideas and tips/tricks are also welcomed!

Blake,

The pulling trucks that the NR/CTPA uses don't have suspension. Are you wanting to build a 4WD truck like is in this thread called 'In Deep'?

The chassis is just 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 tubing in which the axles, jack shafts and other items are added.

A 12T motor should get the job done.

The weight box can be made from 1-1/2 tubing with capped ends or a weight bar could also be made.

The rear axle is a straight axle and the front can be made using Associated pan car axles or Tamyia axle kits.

E-mail me at [email protected] if you want bare chassis pics . . . they are too big to post here and I have not sized them down yet.

Thanks

Iam not planning on making the truck NR/CTPA legal.

Iam wanting the truck to look a scale as possiable to a NTPA Pro Stock Truck. Ive even thought about making a tube chassis design. Would i tube chassis work?

For the suspension, iam gonna make them as stiff as posiable. Prolly be using 100WT shock oil.

Also, what materials do you use for the hitch?

It is very possible to make a NR/TPA legal truck that looks scale too. There are a couple in the assocation that are tube chassis. I will have to look through my pics to see if I have any I can send you.

You can try using 100 wt oil in the shocks, but you will also want to use a pistion with one hole and that hole be a small one. The reason for this, as you don't want the hitch height to change as you pull.

For the hitch, you can use a 1/4"+ thick piece of plate aluminum that has a slot milled in it for an eye bolt with a hole minimum of 5/16" then double nut it and that way you can adjust it. I am sure all of this will make more sense as you look at the pictures of the chassis I sent you.

Thanks

I would suggest making a simulated suspension at least in the rear. Just get a rod the correct length and thread the ends. Put a ball link on the one end, and put the other into a shock cap that has had a hole drilled in the (inside) top of it. Then just slide the shock body over the rod and thread it into the cap. There you have a solid suspension that looks functioning.

Problem with even a stiff suspenion is that no matter how stiff it is, get enough weight, and it will compress. As the suspension compresses, the hitch height gets lower, resulting in less traction. A solid suspension will keep the hitch at the same height throught the pull, and take all the weight on the hitch (and then some) on the rear axle.

I have one I built from scratch.I used a bruiser frame and put nitro in it.Made alot of piece from scratch.I made the rear stiff with med. front end.I had the same idea over the winter and started on it.Everything done except the motor, got a safety issue with it.Will tell you if you plan on turning some r's put a safety switch in it.As far as rules 1 motor(nitro),hitch 2.5,24 inches long, weight ?,thats just want I used.Have fun with it.When you get it done post some pic's or bring it to the worlds.
