First off let me say hello. Im Dave from IL and I say Im new to the hobby because its been a long time since Ive owned an rc car and Ive gotten way out of touch with everything. I had a Lunch Box back then and my buddy had an RC10. Then we got into the real car game and I still have my Nova and he still has his Camaro. He also still has his RC10 and just found the parts he needs to restore it but all of my stuff is long gone. So after we bought one of my sons a cheapy rc Hummer for Christmas it made me realize how much I missed having a real rc car.
Im tossing around the idea of either a Duratrax Evader or a Wheely King. I want something relatively inexpensive, rtr, somewhat durable and easy to hop up. Poking around here for a few weeks it seems like you all are the experts to ask for opinions on the matter.

Welcome to the site.

What are you looking to do with your rc truck? Are you looking for a rock crawler, a scale trail rig, general basher, etc?

Do you want 2WD or 4WD?

The Wheely King 4x4 RTR makes a good starter basher, and can be converted to a crawler.

The Axial AX-10 RTR is a great starter crawler, and can be converted to a basher.

I'd probably choose the Wheely King 1st as it offers more speed that the AX-10 out of the box.

First, Welcome. :tmb

Well I'll suggest the Traxxas Slash.
It's ready to run and at around 200 bucks is a great buy. It can take more abuse than just about anything else. You tube has plenty of vids where guys are beating the heck out of it.

Ive always been a fan of monster trucks so the Wheely King interests me. But the speed of those off road type trucks are cool also. I dont know why but the rock crawling thing never appealed to me much but maybe once I get going on whatever I end up with thatll change. Hhmmm...maybe Ill have to buy 2 new trucks:tmb
I think Ive watched those videos.
Welp, gotta go to work to pay for these things:wnk

The stampede has been a good truck for beginner and old hat. But I'm being partial. :tmb

Welcome! :rock

I started here as a newbie with a Wheely King 4x4, which I've modded pretty heavily.
It didn't stay stock for long, tho sometimes I want another WK to keep stock.

I also have a Slash which I put a VXL in (brushless motor/esc), and I must say I drive that more than my other vehicles.
They're aren't too fast stock with a Titan 12t motor, but they are waterproof with that setup.
Going VXL (brushless) takes away the water/mud fun, but they sure do fly.

I don't have a Stampede, 2WD but they're sweet trucks and durable.
Also fast if you opt for VXL.

It sounds like you want a Wheely King.
Monster truck.. 4WD.. solid axle.. fairly easy to work on and modify.. bash-able.. crawl-able.. whatever-you-want-able.

Where abouts in IL you from? West Frankfort (Southern part) myself. Go with a Stampede, trust me on this one :)
Complete opposite! Machesney Park about 15-20 miles off the northern border. Stampede, Wheely King and Slash. Hhhmmm:conf. Is the Duratrax a pile of crap? Nobody gave any input on that one.

The Duratrax crawler?

..there's been a few things said, hasn't been hugely popular. I've only seen one or two members that have one.
There's a thread around here somewhere.

I think the body of the Duratrax looks a little goofy/cartoonish.

You said you don't like the Stampede, but I see people often talk about how much they abuse theirs and it keeps going.
I have a Rustler VXL, which is basically a lower/truggy version of a Stampede and it's lots of fun.

The Slash is fun. Like I said it's not very fast stock, but it goes pretty good and it's waterproof.
It's not really much for hardcore terrain, more for flat dirt areas, jumps and tracks.
If you wanted to race a Slash, you probably can't go brushless cuz of class regulations.

Wheely King isn't very fast either, but you can put a different motor in it and the battery tray can hold 7cells.

Best bet is to watch as many Youtube videos as you can and decide from there.

Welcome, my brother just got a used duratrax evader st. Its a pretty fun truck, hasn't been bashed too hard yet. I was impressed with how tough it looked, since duratrax has such a poor(low quality) reputation here.

Welcome aboard neighbor, I live in Rockford. As for Duratrax they make good trucks I have a little brushless Vendetta that is fun. I also have a Slash with a VXL and thats a good truck. As for a wheely King I've never owned one, but won't mind owning one. HPI makes some great trucks I still have my first truck and that was a Nitro Mt. Good luck choosing one or more:willy.

Hey Sonic, are any of the local hobby shops around here worth looking into? I used to get stuff at Royal Hobby way back when and I browsed through Hobby Town when it was in the mall out here in Parkansas.
