New computer build!

Well, I have been using my original build since 2009 (ordered new parts almost exactly 7 years apart), started having issues with USB not working, weird noises, etc.

So, I figured it was time to "retire" it as my main computer (hoping to fix a few things and let Keira play with it and learn some stuff).

Anyways, I replaced everything but the stereo and one of my hard drives. The monitor, keyboard, mouse, and tower were all replaced.

Parts list:
G Skill Ripjaws MX780 RGB Gaming mouse
Asus ROG Maximum VIII Hero/Whetstone LGA 1151 Z170 MOBO
Western Digital Black 5TB 7200 RPM hard drive
Western Digital Black 1TB 7200 RPM backup hard drive
Asus DRW-24B1st Dvd burner
Intel i5-6600K Skylake 3.5 ghz CPU
NZXT Aperture Media reader with usb 3.0
Evga GeForce GTX 950 FTW GPU
Evga SuperNOVA 650W Fully Modular Gold PS
AsusVS248H-P 24" HDMI monitor
Sharkoon DG7000 Blue ATX Mid tower
GSkill Ripjaws 4 16 gig 288 pin DDR4 3000 Ram
DeepCool Gammaxx 400 CPU cooler
3x Cougar 140mm HDB fans
Cooler Master Storm Octane led gaming keyboard
RGB Led light strip with remote control
Windows 7 Ultimate 64

I compared the old build with it's newer graphics card (original one died) to the new on on 3d Mark Vantage benchmarking program. The original computer build without the new GPU scored a 6911 and with the new GPU it was a 12519. The new build I just finished received a score of 28569 with no mods, overclocking, etc. so hopefully it will last me the next 10 years or so...

Ah new computer builds are awesome. I love the smell of new hardware!

I didn't see a SSD in your parts. I suggest you grab one if anything just for the OS. It is amazing how much faster they are than standard rotary drives. Either way enjoy the new build. What games are you gonna play? If you liked original Doom I suggest you grab the new version. It's quite fun.

Thanks Manfjourde, not sold on SSD's. Bad enough having to worry about a regular HDD going out and losing stuff, let alone my entire OS. I am planning on researching more but from the warnings and things to look out for, to me it isn't worth the hassle. I don't game a lot, but I do plan on doing more with this one. I usually stick to the PS4 but I do have Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 (just bought), Hard Reset (came with GPU), some other RTS type games, etc. I am actually shopping for something else right now. Problem is, most of the games I like are 20$ cheaper on PS4 than on PC...

Dang you gotta watch for deals. I swear most games on steam or other digital PC game sites are usually cheaper than the other platforms.

Do your research on SSDs. I was weary too but after having one I don't think I can go back. I just got a 128 (64 would work) and put the OS on it and have pics and music and everything else on the standard drives.

I've been researching a little, talking to people, etc. My brother was a programmer in the Air Force and is trying to talk me into it, my cousin helped me build my first computer and he also is trying to talk me into it. I am looking at a 250 gig Samsung Evo 850 at the moment.

One of the games I wanted was Metal Gear Solid V. On Steam it is 40$, on Newegg I can get the PS4 version for 21$ :( I buy some things on Steam, but I am one of those guys that would rather have a disk than a "digital promise". Lol, paranoid. Too many things have influenced that thinking in the past...

Man your were not messing around ! nice st-up ! I feel you some of my set-up is getting long in the tooth I try and refresh my set-up every 3 years or so . I have exact same keyboard and use G.skills Ram as well .. But i like to root for the underdog so last few years just do AMD builds Have nicely overclocked Power-driver Build ...

my current set-up ...

Doesn't look like the same keyboard Dom :p lol I want to upgrade to the G-Skill RGB 780 keyboard but I am waiting for Black Friday.

I went ahead and ordered a Samsung 850 EVO Pro 256gb SSD last night. Still not sold on it, but I had a bunch of rebates and refunds from Newegg so I needed to buy something before I forgot about them lol. I will install it and see how it goes...

Nice looking rig. It's hard to believe my "new" PC was built a year and a half ago. Tme flyes man. Since I posted pics of mine a year ago I hooked up the LED fans and recently put an AMD RX 480 GPU in. I'll try to get some new pics of mine later today.

As far as SSDs go, this was my first experience with them. Everyone insisted that they were a worthwhile upgrade, and I have to agree. System boot up is insanely fast. From off to the desktop in less than a minute. I have my OS (win 10) and my pictures on a 250GB SSD and all of my games and music on a 1TB HDD that I recently added because the 250GB SSD was filling up with Steam games FAST.

Looks good, I read you weren't supposed to put pics on an SSD though? Movies, games, etc. shouldn't be on there either??? I had no issues with my boot speed with a regular HDD, haven't noticed much difference between it and an SSD so far. Pretty sure it was a waste of money. That and now I have to shortcut to everything on my regular HDD's... I have the 256GB SSD, a 1 TB Western Digital Black and a 5 TB Western Digital Black. I keep all my Steam games on the 5TB.

your doing what's recommended smaller SSD just as boot drive and larger disk drive for saving larger files .. The only reason they say not to use a SSD for general file storage is because there usually much smaller drives is all + price per GB of storage for a platter drive is so cheap why not cheap everything on secondary drive ... i am thinking about getting 960gb SSD drive to replace my current boot drive because i can get a great price on it .. If i did i will store more picture and photos files on it than i did on my 256SSD ... you should be seeing noticeable faster boot times if not there's a bottleneck somewhere ... but unless your really comfortable i would not mess around too much in your Bios or programs like MSCONFIG

I mean as far as the starting of Windows, it's never taken more than a minute for me even with my old computer build.

I set my ram at 3000 instead of 2133, OC'd my CPU to 4.5 GHZ, and upped my GPU power around 25%. Everything is running stable, I am getting a score of 29282 on 3d Mark Vantage and 9603 on 3d Mark 11. I'm currently in 4th place out of 248 similar systems on 3d Mark 11. Not too bad I don't think.

Now I just need a Logitech G29 steering wheel with pedals and shifter so I can play Rally and Nascar games...

Look into Dirt Rally. It is supposed to be a top notch sim style rally game. I havent played it but it got rave reviews.its next on my want list and its on sale this week thru steam. Also ylu can download Forza 6 Apex beta for free from the Windows store. I really like that one.

My handle on Steam is kennyfrommodesto if anyone wants to add.

I put my pics on my ssd so they would load faster. I dont like having to wait for them to come into focus.

I bought a Steam pack with Dirt Rally, Dirt 3, Connor Mcgregor? and Dirt Showdown all for less than 40$ after tax. Now I need my steering wheel :D

And I am still not sure what is going on with WRC 6, it says it is supposed to be out on the 7th but I can't find a U.S. preorder anywhere, not on Amazon, on the WRC website, etc.
