My Un-Named WK race chassis.

I have been planning a chassis like this for about a year or so now but never actually put the plan into action. With the NRCTPA instating a class for the smaller axle'd 2.2 tire size MT's I needed to make it happen to have something to compete with!

I wanted to make the lowest possible CG chassis I could with the most adjustment and flexibility for equipment changes as I could. I settled on the Axial trans being my best option for this setup so I could get the motor right ontop of the battery and keep the driveline angles low. Plus it has a real slipper clutch on it which is a must. I was planning on running the new Axial WB8 driveshafts as well but I cant get my hands on enough of the universal joints in time for the worlds so it looks like pede sliders will have to do.

Its still got a long way to go, but I have been tinkering with it for a few weeks now and really want to share it with you guys. More updates to come really soon!

Coming along nicely Mo. This will be a nice layout for racing. Man, that's one long turnbuckle on the steering knuckles

where did you get the chassis plates machined at? i was looking into making my own a while back but the machine shop wanted over 200$ to machine a set of plates to my liking.

i wanted to keep my trans upright but lower everything else so the truck itself still had the same config of the wheely king but better COG and lower weight/more shock positions.

Kevin, It was "machined" on a Harbor Freight bandsaw and drill press in my backyard lol. Im honored to see you think it looks decent enough to think it was made on a mill though!

Will, the steering drag link is indeed long, but its a Lunsford TI unit. I doubt there will be any issues with durability. Plus I like being able to quickly adjust my toe on the fly.

I just need to buy another set of the turnbuckles Im using for upper links and get my shocks in to finish the setup. Once my Axial diff cups come in to go with my Axial machined diff gears Ill be running!

Got some more work done today.

My orginal idea of mounting the sway bar beneath the shock mounting plates wouldn't work because it interfered with the upper links. I spent a few hours trying to figure out fancy places to put it under the chassis and between the lower links but I really like the mechanical look of having it mounted up high for everyone to see. Plus it helps to keep the bar nice and short so it can be as stiff as possible. I just drilled a new hole near the top edge of the mounting plates for the wire to run through.

The brass is just there for mockup. I cant imagine how horrible of a sway bar it would actually be haha.

My cross members, shocks, ESC and upgraded gears for the Axial trans are at the shop waiting for me to pick up tomorrow. Cant wait!

I don't know where you got your "styling cues" but I like your design a lot- it does look great I think the position of the tranny is key and it looks like you nailed it. Don't know about the sway bar set up. And what I mean is "I really have no clue about sway bars- I just know that they help suspension" so I hope they work out for you!

Thanks man. I tried to pay tribute to alot of my favorite chassis designs of the past while doing some things I have been wanting to try on my own for years. Hopefully it all works together.

The sway bar is kind of an old school setup. Most chassis nowadays hide theirs down between the links or next to the links. This configuration reminds me of the one used on the most recent Powers chassis. Right up and out there for the world to see. They are a must on any shaft driven truck though. Without a nasty sway bar setup they just turn themselves into pretzels every time you hit the throttle from the torque twist.

John, Worlds ARE just around the corner ;)

can you elaborate on how you made your link mount. It looks like a piece of angle but i cant figure out the block that the links mount to

I actually didnt make the link mounts. They are genuine Defiance Racing link mounts.

They consist of a piece of angle with a small block bolted ontop of them through the bottom of the angle.

I like the anti-sway bar up there in view, looks "cooler" seeing it in action when the truck is moving.

Mo'bile.. hmmmm. That will warrant some serious thought haha.

All my other goodies came in today! Got my shocks on, cross members in and my shock mounting plate spacers in as well. Im not feeling the shock setup at all but I still have a long way to go with that. I just wanted to get the on there and sitting so I could see it all done up with the tires on. Really loving this setup overall.

On the list for tomorrow will be to:

-Make the sway bars
-Instal the steel gears in the trans
-Build up the diffs
-Instal my ESC and servo
-Mount the body
-Smooth out my new servo mount so it doesnt look so terrible

Should be a running tomorrow.

I put them a little too far raked out on my mock up attempt. It has a really goofy ride height and just doesnt feel right. really stiff you know. Not enought leverage on the shocks for how light the truck is.

I moved them farther back on the links and farther up on the mounting plates to get a little more push on them and its alot better. Im gonna start bending up the sway bars soon. Ill be posting pics of the complete roller with body and good shock geometry shortly.

It rolls and doesnt twist!

Sway bars are all done. Went old school with the soldered on balls since my nifty little Traxxas sway bar connector links didn't have the range of motion needed for these sway bars. They were binding horribly at full compression so I went back to the classic setup.

I was hoping to have the gears in the front axle but didnt get around to it yet. The rain impeded my ability to crack out the bandsaw and make my radio plate too. Hopefully it should be a runner tomorrow.

Oh yeah. Got the body mounted too!

THIS is what I wished the Traxxas MJ trucks were... Oh well. Thanks for the rad bodies.

What kind of sway bars are they? Almost look like one of the sway bars that come on the Traxxas 4x4. Either way, it looks SWEET!

They are just some K+S 1/8th inch music wire bent to shape with a vice. It would be nice to have an off the shelf one that fit but it never seems to work out that way.
