My 1st Ground Pounder; "Truck #1" Is being rebuilt

I never intended to do this.
I was out driving this truck one day.
I took it out in the road, and steered it toward the curb.
I let it coast, and right before the front tires contacted the curb, I stabbed the gas.
The truck did an insane slap-wheelie-esque jump up on to the grass.
It landed hard on the tailgate, like a lawn dart kind of.
I was originally going to just replace the mangled chassis plates.
But then, later on(yes I kept driving it) I heard a violent crunching sound in the rear axle.
Which was the topic of my thread, Driveshaft went crrrrunch.
So, in went the hardened steel gears.
Meanwhile, I got a PM from Brett @ CPE.
He said he was doing a race chassis conversion on a customer's new GP, and asked me if I wanted the stock gunmetal chassis/battery plates.
I said YES !
So I got those.
The F250 Super Duty body that I had been using for awhile, is in shambles.
It looks like its been in a war.
So, I chose to replace it, with a Pro-Line F650 Super Duty body.
I also found that Tamiya, makes gun metal paint.
So the truck will have: gunmetal chassis & links, black(or at least mostly black) wheels, and a gunmetal truck body on it.

At this point, the truck is a rolling chassis.
I recently picked up some Imex diamond nylon wheels.
Today, just a few minutes ago, I finished dying them Black.
I may have to do that again, depending on how they look after they dry.
I also have installed some parts on this truck, of which, I have not gotten the "Ok" to share information on.
These parts are intended to correct and prevent a very common issue with this truck.
Let's just say, Mike Hesse strikes again ! lol.

Yes, I will post pics; but not until its done.

I laid the body down on the tires.
Normally with a monster truck, the tires look huge in proportion to the tires, hence it being a monster truck.
With this F650 body though, the tires look like they came stock for that truck lol.

I also bought a Traxxas TQ 2.4ghz radio, for both of my GP's, so that should fix any radio issues that could arise.

As I said before, I just dyed the wheels today. I may attempt to do the body today, but will probably wait on that till I get more ideal temprature to paint in.

Thanks, yeah I just need to decide what to do about the wheels. I dyed them today, and they came out a verry deep purple instead of black, like I wanted.

Just dye them again and they'll go fully black. It's normal to have to dye white parts twice when going to black.

Oh...I wish I had seen this yesterday.
I was talking with Will G, and he suggested paint, so that's what I bought.
Oh well I hope they turn out ok.

Okay folks, I have been given the okay, from Mike Hesse.

The parts he made for me, Are........Axle Trusses! Not only that, but they are 1 piece units that bolt to the bottom of the axle housings, that Include lower shock/link mounts built in.

Yes, I will post a picture of them tonite ! :tmb

haha i bet those are my old chassis plates. i had brett build me a CPE race chassis GP and i didnt need the old plates or battery hold downs.

truck sounds like its going to have a great theme to it, any plans on a name?

also, have you upgraded to the hardened drive shafts?

Kevin, yeah I am quite confident that I got your old plates.
The theme of the truck really just happened by itself.
I got the gunmetal chassis, and then the thought crossed my mind; " I wonder if I could find some gunmetal paint.."
Sure enough I did.
Although, now that I think about it, the chassis is gunmetal, and even though the label on the cans of paint I bought says "gunmetal", it looks a bit more gunmetal-grey to me.
I just painted the wheels black tonite.
The dye experiment made them purple, so at Will's advice, I got some paint and painted them black.
They seemed to have come out well.
As for the body, I laid down a few coats of gunmetal on to it, I am letting it set for a while, then I will go down and lay down the backing color of grey, then I should be good to go on that. I'm gonna let everything sit till tomorrow nite.

Also, yes I did get the metal driveshafts. Some gunmetal parts recently came in stock at RedCat, so I snapped up what I needed, now just waiting for them to arrive.

As for a name for this truck, I hadn't thought of naming it actually. I will have to think about it; I'm open to ideas if anyone has any.

I like those braces. Nice work Hesse.

Can you get a shot of those braces from the front? I havent had an axle housing issue yet, (Pounding on wood), but will probably add those to the list if they come available. As well as sway bars maybe.

Will, I painted the wheels, they came out great.
Since I had good luck with that, I decided to paint the body too.
That came out mostly good.
Work was hellaciously crazy today, so I won't be able to work on it till tomorrow or so.

looks great so far Brian :tmb..... i agree with Will on the shock location to lower the center of gravity

I do too. Which is why I will be doing that. I am changing the lower link-mounted shock mounts to the RC4WD ones. I don't want to bend or break the bottom ends of the shocks anymore. I've already broken one since I started using this setup, back in the summer of last year.

The truck is coming along slowly.
I have the body painted and trimmed, now just have to put in on body mounts.
I think I will borrow the stock mounts from "truck #2" for the time being till I get the ones I want for "truck #1".

What if you mounted to swaybar arms to the inside of the chassis plates, then move the shock lowers to the place where the swaybar lowers are now?

Then you'll have the shock on the outside, the link in the middle, and swaybar on the inside. All using the same mount.

Or if you hit the lotto...
Have some special machined lower links made with shock and swaybar mount points built in.
