Ground UP Redo!!!!!

Well its been a bit since I really messed with a truck but the old fires are a burning again! I have had visions of this ever since the Wraith hit the streets. Then folks started using the parts for monsters a little and they were holding up so that just cemented my plans. Now just cause stock Wraith stuff is holding up for most folks I knew I would have to "bullet-proof" a tad more cause after all this is MAX-D!!! Oh.....that's purty!

Now since this truck began life as a Clod axled truck it is going to take a little doing to get some shafts up under it. First thing was to fab up a tranny mount that I can bolt in and out of the lower cradle.

Since this truck has always been one of my favorites I tend to run the weasel snot out of it! That is going to kind of drive everything that gets done to it. It must be as indestructable and highly functional as possible. That being said I whipped up some semi rigid mounts for the gearbox that will hopefully eliminate some stress to the frame. Also I have visions of it isolating the powertrain a little and helping aid in controlling torque twist since this truck doesn't run swaybars......time will tell.

First part complete. Nice baked enamel finish on it (which I have had great success with in the past0 and the mounts assembled and installed.

And the heart goes into the beast.....

That's it for now folks. But for those of you that like to follow my builds stay tuned! I have some big plans for this one. You see some stuff that hasn't been seen before on this one..... I was never able to scale Max cause of the geometry of the suspension with the Clod stuff compared to how the real truck is laid out but that all changes with this rework. I think this one is going to be cool!:cool

So these took some doing and I waited for them for a bit but finally have them so figured I would do an update. These are well beyond the realm of overkill but man o' man you want to talk about cool! Now that I have them hopefully I can get this truck update really rolling. It will be a slow build though cause this truck is getting the sickest parts that I can build or find.

Initial layout looks like this truck is going to run in the 12 to 12.5 inch wheelbase.

Well that's it for now but figured there were a few on here that would appreciate seeing these new goodies!

I always work thru these decisions on my own but this one has me talking myself in circles as silly as it is. Which one of the links do you all like best! The actually Heim (sp?) joints on the 1:1 truck are stubby and you don't really see the jam nuts unless you are looking for them so the one I built in the photo below Is sort of exaggerated in size which bugs me a bit..... but it does have a cool affect! Then one on the left is more streamlined and marches looks wise a little better even though there is no jam nut..... Soooo what so you RCMTrs?!! It may be decided for me cause I might need to little extra length the nuts provide to get the suspension to lay out where I want it (and I don't' want to have to make another set of limks for a 1/4"! Lol)

I'm assuming that you are using 6-32 allen studs. What about a #6 conical? It would still give you that streamlined look.

Without the nut it is. This weekend I figired out how to make my monster rod ends ( my favorites) work with these housings finally! So that settled it, no nuts. Lol

Though you have decided against it, the jam nuts on the real one are pretty large. And IMO are obvious. If it were me mine would have them, not just for looks but for the actual purpose. But hey to each their own right?

I like the jam nuts as well. Nothing on these trucks is going to be 100% scale, the thought to include them and be able to point them out as another little detail is what I'd be after. And it's not like they are "cartoonishly" too large either

I'm no fan of Goldberg/Max D, but I do admire nice hardware. This thing is amazing. Kudos on swapping out the Clod axles for shafties. I've always felt that tubers were wasted on Clods. I would have gone with the jam nuts on the links, as well (since you asked). Nothing worse than having a bolt break inside the link when the link-end fails.

You all may get your wish....since I have figured out how to make the monster rod ends work I am going to take another look at it with the jam nuts because they'll balance much better with the size. Also I think I want just a tad bit nore length on the links to get the shock geometry just where I want it. Plan on spending some time fiddling with it this weekend and hopefully getting the running gear under it so maybe have a couple of pics to show for it!
