On a bit of budget at the moment while we do the IVF thing and have been thinking about making some TVP chassis plates for my wheely king. What thickness should I use ? I only have basic tools to work with as well ie cordless drill, hacksaw, dremel, determination and a 6 pack of bundy. Any tips ?

.093 aluminum is about what would be ideal. 1/16" is .062 which is a little thin and 1/8" which is .125 is more than needed. It can vary above or below but if you go close to that (.093) that'll get you a good combination of strength and lightness. The thinner the aluminum, the easier it is to work on if your using all hand tools too.

A drill, some hand files, dremel and maybe a band saw or smaller would be ideal. If you have no power saw, a hack saw could be used in some places. Oh, and the most important thing.......patience:)
