how do you

how do you choose what parts you will use on your mt builds? I decided at the beginning of this year that I was going to build a new truck and just throw the budget out the window with my wifes permission of course. her only requirement was that I don,t spend all the money at one time. So with that part (getting wifes permission) out of the way I stared to make a list of what I wanted and do my research. I'm buying what I think and what most people on what ever forums are saying are good parts and have top rated reviews. then sorting threw them until I find the parts that will meet my needs with the #1 need being able to take abuse. I would really like to know what parts you like and use. it does not matter what the part is or what its for because my chassis is going to be made to fit the parts I chose to use. I do need some help with choosing shocks though, it seem to be a tough decision on them. thanks guys and gals I know you all have some great ideas ive seen your builds on here and most of them are great and some are works of art. I would post a pick of my clod but for some reason I cant post attachments.

I assume this going to be for a Clod based MT? I would pick a chassis first and than add parts to complement it. To do this the other way around doesn't make sense.

I think you need to decide what type vehicle your truck is going to be built around. Is it going to be a Clod or a shaft driven truck, or an independent suspension truck like a T-Maxx or similar. Once you have the basic truck or idea in hand, then you can decide on a chassis. The chassis is the basis for everything else. You have to decide if you want a race chassis or basher type chassis, or even a custom tube chassis. Everything attaches to the chassis, so that should be your starting point. Some people like to start assembling the drivetrain after that, but I like to have the body in hand before starting the rest of the chassis. I like to make the wheelbase match close to the wheel openings. This will determine how long you make your suspension links. To me those would be the basics of getting started. From there, there's a lot choices on which parts to use, but it depends on which style build you're planning.

I decide what truck I want ie Wheely King or Clod Buster or whatever, then choose the parts that I want.

I usually buy upgrades based on value. Bang for my buck.

You have to start with a base, that will be shafty or MOA..
Simple start that gets the ball rolling.
MOA will definately cost more from an electronics stand point, but drivetrain parts on a shafty can make up for it in the long run.

This is just my opinion, but this is what I was thinking of for my three options.

#1 Clod Based - simple, lots of parts still available, proven technology. Chassis CPE or ZRP. I have a ZRP and a Thunder Tech Ripper, love them both..
#2 Axial Wraith based axles and trans. BUT would start with aluminum housings and lots of high $$ goodies from Super Shafty. Chassis was kind of up in the air, there are LOTS that would work.
#3 Kyosho based Mad/Twin Force axles from Super Shafty, with most likely one of his bomb proof transmissions.

On the Shafty trucks, I was seriously thinking that I would end up building my own chassis. I have a CNC mill and can buy material to cut, so what thinking that I would end up with something that is kind of a hybrid.
Think VERY low center of gravity and some wicked power...

All three would be on brushless power, with #2 and #3 being on most likely a pro4 based Tekin or other short course 550 sized motor.

I know the shafty options would stand up to the abuse the big tires can dish out, and if not, there are guys on the crawler pages that are building LOTS of hop up parts for them.

I ended up buying two clod based trucks and in the future am planning on a shafty truck.
Again, just my $.02 worth.. Good luck..

I've done clods and im done with them so my truck will be a shafty. I am taking a totally different approach on this truck that's why I asked what everyone was using for parts. I got sick of buying parts that just bend and break on my last build and it ended up costing me more then just going nuts from the start getting good parts. so this time its loots of time reading and doing research on what people are saying are the best stuff out there and then I will build my fourth tube chassis around all my parts, and if you are wondering, yes this is crazy but I need something that will take the abuse so recommend some good parts I should use on this thing.

TXT or Wraith based build...

Guys cant tell you wat parts to buy unless you know what driveline you are building your truck around. If you are not using Clod axles, there are a few to choose from...TXT, Wraith, Ground Pounder, Mad Force. I personally like the Wraith setup, tons of replacement and aftermarket parts out there. The Mad Force axles would be my second choice, matched up with an Emaxx trans.

at this point I would say axial based.

wk is out becuase most the parts are gone or soon to be.

like if you cannot get some mip's for the front 4wd is out with any power system.

never did the txt stuff but hear there a weaker driveline and to me one of the ugliest axles of all makes but thats just my take on them and why I never bothered.

the txt chassis are one of my favorites still though.

thanks guys that's the kind of information i'm looking for this was just a general question on what every one here likes to use and why of stuff like do not use these parts there junk

I have always been a fan of builds (RC and full size vehicles) that use alot of parts that "don't belong" on them. How many parts and assembly's with cool features intended for other vehicles and applications can you fit onto your build and make them look like the belong? There are soooo many cool components large and small out there just waiting to be re-purposed. I guess that's why I like solid axle builds so much. You really cant build one without having to re-purpose a few parts. They will all be unique to some degree.

THAT'S what makes a cool build in my eyes. Not how many direct bolt on aluminum, pre packaged parts you can stuff onto a truck. Not how many different colored parts you can use. Not how much it looks like something else someone has already built. Not how much money people end up spending on them. It cracks me up when people post cost breakdowns with their "builds" like that somehow makes it more impressive. The quirkier the better!
