Hey guys, I got some motor questions.

I've been rock crawling with Clod axles for a few years now and I've got the slow thing down pat.. (3rd in points last year in the SERCRC series), but I'm a complete newb to the fast Clod scene.

It all started when a buddy of mine said something along the lines of "You need to get an e-maxx so you can race me and the other guys." I told him I'd just build a fast Clod and whoop up on him, he replied "those things ain't good for nothing but crawling"

Fast forward.. I've got what I think is a pretty capable Clod I recieved in a trade. Red Xtreme carbon fiber chassis, good shocks, I mean the truck was built well. I was told it ran at a "Worlds" on carpet.

It came with a pair of 17 turns and stock 13 tooth pinions. I wired it up and was dissapointed. I figured it wouldn't be what I wanted and I was right. The speed was not what I hoped for and of course the runtime was not either. It was fast, but remember, what I'm wanting is an e-maxx beater.

So I put in a pair of Johnson motors that I had gotten from a friend, he said they came on an e-maxx he got, but never ran them. I wired them up to an EVX and ran them on 14.4 and that was much better. It ran even with my buddys maxx, even had better runtime to boot.

So, here's where I'm asking for help. I'd like it to be faster. Of course I know of the Titan motors. But that's the only motors I know. I would like some other options other than those. They need to run on 14.4. I've heard mention of "multiplex" motors but don't know anything about them, or where to get them.

I'd also like to know where these motors stack up against each other, speed/power wise. Would the Titans be better than the Multiplex, or the Johnsons. I just can't start buying without some advice from someone more experienced than I...

Hook me up with some options guys..

The Titans, if I'm not wrong are listed as 550's. The multiplex's are listed as 600's and are really sweet. They will stand up with the EVX no problem at all. I have that exact set-up in one of my trucks now. And they are surprisingly cheap.

You can get them at Tower Multiplex motors

the mulitplex 600s are discontinued. it sucks because they are really good and were only $8.49 each! Super cheap! They are big as hell though and might hit your 4-link bars depending on your chassis/setup.

You can also use an EVX or similar to put 14.4 or 16.8 volts to the stock Tamiya silver cans. they will scream but aren't rated for that kind of power and will probably go up in smoke sooner than later.

Well now that sucks, would have thought I'd seen the "discontinued" on Towers site. Sorry bout that. Why is it that when ever a good thing comes out, it's short lived. I guess it's a good thing I got a set for the 72 Chevy when I did.

Thanks for sharing some options with me. I'm probably gonna try a couple of the motors from All Electronics.

It's actually funny you sent me there, I used to get their catalogue YEARS ago, they sold the coolest surplus junk!

Actually those $3.75 motors from All Electronics look a lot like the Multiplex motors. The Multiplex 600s in the USA were black like you see on Tower, but in the UK they were silver like those. Hmmm....

Hey, I may have just scored. Kershaw designs has the Multiplex 600's on e-bay for 5.99. Doesn't seem to bad.

Two questions though. They ARE more powerful than the Titans right? Also, they are listed as a 7.2v motor, will they last on 14.4?

Tower Hobbies says 5-10 cells and I know a lot of emaxx guys ran 12-14 cells with no problem.

All the emaxx guys say they are definitely faster.

If you can get them.......Then get them :willy !! I've had no problems with mine at all. And trust me, they'll hold up to 14.4 :tmb.

is one better or are they really the same?
what are they rated at turn wise?

also, would i want one in my stampede (or WK?!!)
i have a SpeedGems 17t triple in the pede now.

AFAIK they are 18x1 and according to the UK guys, they are the same motor just different color can.

Would you want one in a WK? I don't know, but I do! I have a nice new black one in my toolbox ready and waiting for the time when I get a WK.

Did you seen when I made my Clod a wheely king in reader's rides? One multiplex on 6 cells made it stand up on command. It was a little faster than it was with a silver can stocker too...

I've also ran the multiplex 600 in a touring car. When I changed from Tamiya silver can to Multiplex 600 (changing nothing but the motor), the touring car was much faster. A big difference. You would think that I would have to use a smaller pinion since I went from a 27t to an 18t but nope, they have so much torque they can pull the tall gearing NO SWEAT. The motor was ambient temp after a run with gearing that made a silver can too hot to touch. It's crazy.

So I think in a WK, you could use stock gearing and get more torque and possibly a bit more speed, or you could gear it up a little, cut down on wheelies a little and gain more speed.

When I get a WK I'll report how it works out...

Here is the topic on my Clod with the one Multiplex motor in back. The video was with stock Clod gearing and a 6 cell stick pack.

Here is a comparison pic next to a Tamiya silver can motor, which I think is what comes in the Wheely King (but with a HPI sticker)...

They are quite a bit bigger. I hope there is no clearance issue on the WK (I don't know what the motor area on the WK looks like as far as space).

i cant believe we keep having the same ideas for the WK!
your clod was awesome btw.

so...
18 x 1 on a 600, huh?
how do you think that would stand up to the 17 x 3?

My Clod isn't like that any more. Now I'm back to dual silver cans and a flat black 50s Chevy truck body..

What 17x3? Any 17x3?

Actually they are Johnson motors. All the other 600 and 650 sized motors on their site are Johnsons as well but they have built in timing. They work ok for a Power Wheel (even though one motor has to be reversed), but not so good for a Clod. The 700 series DCM-265 is neutral timed though if anyone is looking for a real stump puller motor.

Where is Calata? He is the expert. He had the Multiplex motors in his Clod and his Emaxx...
