Help me decide (Buy new or try a build)

Hi guys,

So I am really enjoying my Ground Pounder but for some reason I keep looking at Axial kits and other scale / trail trucks. Not sure if I would enjoy "going slow". I like the looks of the kits and they seem pretty rugged but not sure what direction to go. I am not interested in an all out crawler and would like something with some pep. Would a Wraith, Scx10, Tamiya cc or other be a fit?

The Wraith is the "peppiest" of the bunch. I bought the rtr and actually slowed it down for better crawling. It is designated as a rock racer so it crawls well and goes pretty good too.

The SCX10 is more of a trail rig but if you add a 3s pack it will scoot right along. I have a couple of SCX10s and I enjoy the trail running with them.

The CC01 is limited in ground clearance but is still a pretty decent little truck. I have yet to do any real trail running with my CC01 Jeep as it is just too pretty.

Tamiya also makes a CR01 which is a very cpapble rig. With stock silver can and stock gearing it is pretty quick as well. Once you do a few mods, lose the canti-levers, change out the tires, it makes for a much better truck.

If you have any questions I can probably help you out. I comp crawl, scale crawl and beat on fast trucks.

Hope this bit of info helps you some...

It does help and Thank you. I guess I am mostly concerned that I'll get something and it won't click with me but I guess that's always a chance to take.

I also thought about trying a build with either ground pounder, wheely king, or CPE barbarian chassis. That route would probably be much more $$$$ though.

The whole crawling/trail truck world is pretty spendy.

I own a few SCX10's myself, you really can do alot with them, mild crawler, trail rig, scaler even convert to a MT if you want. I'm very happy with my SCX's. I dont think you really could go wrong if you picked one up.

I am in the same boat razdawg and have a tendacy to not be able to leave things in stock form.

I would like something that looks nice in stock form but also need something where there is no options to upgrade this or that becuase I cannot resist them for some reason lol.

right now I am looking at a sawback they are a sharp quality scaler for cheap.

usually I would never say this but that is what I like most about the sawback is there is no aftermarket stuff yet so I would be forced to leave it alone and in this case and that is fine with me.

I have modded every rc I have had to the max and just need to get something I can be proud of completely stock and leave it as it is type thing.

I been looking at the midnight pumpkin and blackfoot as shelfers but I know they have option parts for them so I know what would happen and why I have not grabbed either or both yet lol.

I also was alway's a dirt flinging speed demon type over scalers but think I will end up with a sawback before this summer is over and do it up in a army look and see if I can find a scale machine gun pod for the back of it that way I am not tempted to go out beating on it.

I know it's like me saying I am going to quit smoking wich is a horrible habbit I regret even starting but I really do need to have one and just leave it be as hard as it may be for me lol.

I love scale stuff and the SCX was almost too capable - it literally went anywhere! It was a lot of fun but was more crawler than scale for me. I want one of the new FJ Cruiser CC-01s because of the IFS and rear solid axle like the real thing. They are fun and capable and way more scale in terms of trailing. I guess ultimately it depends on where you will drive it and what you want it to do.

What does anyone think about the Axial Deadbolt? Looks like it might be a little bit crawler a little bit scaler? Rock basher?

Well I decided to try out some "trailing" yesterday. The only rc I had running was my 2wd Slash with 8.5t Hobbywing. Probably not the best set up. Anyway I was really wondering what people see in the crawling / scale truck scene so I headed over to an area where they have recently removed railroad tracks, just a rock covered trail now. The Slash did better than I expected and I enjoyed the walk a lot more than I expected even with a chill in the air.
I guess with that small glimpse I can now start to see the allure.
As a next step I might try some 2.2 tires on my Ground Pounder? It could be a low level trail truck couldn't it?

I guess i am down to these options:
1) try the Ground Pounder out on some smaller tires
2) look at getting an axial deadbolt or scx10 roller and installing esc/motor/tires
3) I can't help but like the charm of the cc01 Landfreeder.
