Grinding?

So I have been loving my GP with brushless and lipo although when I drive it seems to be more crunchy/grindy than it should. I have the mod1 gears and they are a little louder than stock but it seems almost like the tranny or diffs or something. Is anyone else having this sound slash issue? Am I over-reacting? The Clod i recently built is so quiet compared to the GP...

The metal gears will be louder for sure, but that isn't a grinding noise. Unless the shank of your pinion gear is touching the spur.

I'd look more into the diffs themselves. We sell hardened gears for those if you've chipped and/or stripped a tooth on the ring & pinion.

Thanks Brett, I've double checked mesh on the gears and they look good. I think i will be looking into the hardened diff set. Do you know if the trannies have held up fine or had any issues?

Ahh yes.... it would seem that you have entered into the early stage of the grindy-grind-a-chunka-chunka-clunk-clunk.

In other words, it sounds like you need to order and install the hardened steel differential gears, like Brett mentioned.

I noticed this happening with one of my trucks awhile back, and I was driving it and it started making the grinding sound, next came the rear axle violently bucking.

The pinion gears in your axles are starting to go buh bye.
Just a heads up; pressing the pinion gear, onto the pinion shaft is going to be a little involved.
You have to open up the hole in the pinion gear a little to get the shaft in there, so you can have the gear on there and then put e-clip on the end of the shaft, locking the gear in place.

* One more thing ! * I found that using a thread tap drill bit that is a slight bit larger then the center hole in the pinion gear, is the easiest way to open that hole up a bit to press the gear on to the shaft. If you go at it with a normal drill bit, it will be a time consuming pain in the planetary !

Once you get that done, its just a matter of re-assembling everything. Put some grease on the pinion and diff ring gears, they come dry from the factory.

I'm not aware of any internal transmission gear issues, even on insanely overpowered trucks.

Thanks for the info guys. Brian, I figured you would have something good to say about this. So sad, I figured it would happen soon enough though. What links are you using to be sure the axles don't have any wiggly/slop motion? I am noticing that they (rear especially) are becoming more and more loose.

I am using 2 versions between both of my trucks. #1 has Hesse Machine links and RC4WD long aluminumininum 6/32 rod ends.
#2 is using 3" long, RC4WD solid aluminuminuminum links with M3 heim joint rod ends.

The slop in the ends of the links on my trucks isn't totally gone, but more like 95-98% gone.

Gripe

I need to gripe for a second. So, I took apart my rear axle to install the hardened gears about a month ago. I didn't finish it because I had to open up the hole in the pinion gear and just got around to doing that yesterday.

We had our baby girl about 2 weeks ago so most everything has been on hold to help her and my wife - both are well. Anyway, I had a free hour tonight and decided to put the axl back together. I could remember how the diff sat in the axle so I grabbed the manual and did it how the exploded view was and it was wrong! What really irritates me is that I just figured the manual had it right (even though I faintly remembered it being different) and tightened all the screws and everything without even spinning the shafts to be sure all was correct.

Two things - freakin irritated at myself for having not double checked and tightening everything and basically wasting an hour that is harder to come by than ever, also feeling let down that the stupid manual was wrong.

Pardon the gripe, feels good to get it off my chest. Signing off until I get another chance to hop on.

Okey
