Just got my new gp I picked up from a member on here and after about 10 mins the motor started smoking...badly...its got a traxxas xl5 esc and a hpi firebolt 15t motor in it now, has metal spur gear and 13t pinion and I'm running a 7 cell 4000 may nimh battery ...I have no clue what the problem is ...if anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Check the mesh of the pinion and spur gears; if the mesh is too tight, that will overwork the motor.

check to make sure the gears (gear on the motor and the gear it turns) are not too tight together. Do some research on this forum and you should be able to find a thread explaining how to check that adjustment. To be honest with you, smoke from any of your electronics is not a good sign. Once it cooled down did it seem to work fine again?

Yea after I made sure the gears weren't to tight but could still spin I took it back out n ran it ...ran good a little loud tho..the motor was still getting hot but not smoking but you could smell it and I noticed bright blue sparks coming from the motor..I think it might have been fried from the first time...im thinking about trying a titan 12t since its normally paired with that esc

So i just tried running the truck again and everything was fine for the first couple mins then all I could do was reverse forward didn't work it all..motor made a sound like it wanted to turn but all I seen was blue sparks ....been thinking about putting a traxxas 12t titan or a reedy pulse 13t in it instead or does anyone one have any suggestions?

Went to my LHS today and asked their opinion on what motor to run with my xl5 using the mod1 gears and 13t pinion and they pointed me in the direction of the 21t emaxx motor..so my question is..should I install it and see how it goes or should I take it back and go a different route?

The Emaxx Titans suck on anything less than 3s lipo because it's meant to run on higher voltages, I would return it. The 12t Titan you were thinking about is meant for 7.2-9.6V range and would be a better choice. The best cheap brushed motor choice I would've made was the HPI 15t Firebolt but since that didn't go well I'm out of suggestions.

Yea I was thinking the titan 12t the whole time but of course they said no..and if i don't get the right results my wk could always use a new motor lol...thinking in the future I'll prolly just go with a cheaper brushless like the duratrax element 3900
