Giant BUG, Lobster caught off Maine

Now as kids, and into my 20's we'd always go snorkeling and catch crabs and the occasional lobster. Lobsters normally ranging from 1-4 pounds. However this guy takes the cake at 27 whopping pounds.

Let me just say catching 1 by hand is NOT easy and I've been bitten more times than I can count. Lobsters in the ocean are FAST, and do NOT like a hand going towards them. Distraction is te key and you grab them from behind. They also use the tail as a water scoop and go backwards at 100 mph to get away. Some are more "lively" than others and thrash widely making them hard to hold too. Could not imaging hand catching this guy.

Sucker is huge, and in this vid appears docile but don't let that fool you they hurt and can take off fingers in the under 5 pound range

ummmmm it's not like a pond, you won't catch the same BUG twice LOL:p Heck you hardly see the same shoreline rock twice, the tides and currents move food supplies and the creatures miles in a day some times.

oh, how I hand caught them was to slip my snorkel or flipper off, poke it in front so he snaps at it and grab him from behind with my other hand.

Great story will .. i was worried about releasing too then thought there no way they would release him without some sort of eletronic tagging on him so they could track his movements so they could see how he got that big and old ...

Wow that's what makes the ocean so cool is you never know what's really in there.
We know more about outer space than we do about our worlds oceans. Nasa has better maps of Mars and our Moon than any map of the ocean floor. Strip away the oceans and the earth is actually pretty beat-up looking. We know very, very little about most of the ocean. This is especially true for the middle and deeper parts far away from the coasts.

I have seen a lobster that big before once in an old photograph from one of my fathers friends. He hand caught it on a coral reef in Hollywood, Florida using a tickle stick and his bare hands. He said it did not make for good eating... very stringy and tough. The one in the video was caught in a trawling net. They drag up all kind of crazy stuff.

Whats next a 10000 pound lobster! Well here you go!

:D
HA
That's running in Providence Civic Center this time monster jam is here :) Crazy looking thing.

Maine, and New England lobsters are MUCH better tasting than the gulf, and west coast cousins. Color is normally dark brown here, the ocasional blue purple and yellow show. West coas, mexican and gulf are a light tan-yellowy color but they all cook up red.

Anything large tends to be chewey, better for a salad or sandwhich than a "pick and eat".

My father's shop used to fill tanks for navy divers, so we'd get to see all kinds of crazy stuff they'd drag up from local waters. Plenty of free seafood too for helping them out too.

Now that's a big mudbug!I've snorkeled down in the Florida keys and caught a few lobster. That big sucker would have me swimming the opposite direction however.I wouldn't wanna mess with him.I agree,he's gotta be tough being that old and not good eating.I envy you guys living on the coast who can get fresh seafood at good prices.Seafood here is expensive and rarely fresh tasting.

just figured I'd chime in since Boothbay harbor is about two hrs away from me.:) You guys pretty much covered the basic stuff so I'll just add info where I can :) Most lobsters here are usually just a couple lb.. due to regulations on size. AFAIK I haven't tried to catch a lobster due to the stories I have heard about Lobsterman ramming boats etc.. when you got near their traps. That anchor is an exception most are pretty old and worn. HD doesn't help either a few are pretty though. I kinda know of the guy that owns Crushstation my cousin is friends with him and built him a blazer on 40s or 48s before he built that truck. so I've heard his name before. The guy won the lottery up here and had that truck built. He's a native Mainah too he grew up 10 or 15 min away from me. There must be something getting in the water up here between that monster and the multicolored ones that have been popping up over the last few years.
