Ok the last time I went to the drive in movies was a long time ago. I went with my parents to see Smokey in the Bandit which was probably 1976. This weekend the drive in movie theater in the area is having a throwback night with The Blues Brothers and Animal House. So we might hit it. Never saw the Blues Brothers on the big screen so this might be cool. For dinner we might do another retro deal .... Dog n Suds drive in. Anyone ever been there?
There are a few left scattered throught the States. Dog n Suds was huge at one time. I was talking to the owner of one before and he was telling me that Mcdonalds bought quite a few of the locations to beat them out of business. Matter of fact the Big Mac is a nock off of what I believe Dog n Suds calls there Texas Burger. Here is there website http://www.dog-n-suds.com/ Amazing that there was a place that more popular than Mcdonalds at one point.

We used to take my moms VW Bug to the M-78 Drive Inn all the time. Man at least a couple times a month. That was so much fun, it is a drag they went away. We used to have a Dog-n-Suds on Cedar St. in Lansing. Used to go there all the time too. So I am right there with ya. Just up until last year there was a Drive Inn off of I-69 going towards Port Huron but I really don't know if that was is going anymore and I do think the one in Coldwater is still going but have yet to make it out. While I was in High School the one in Charlotte opened up for a couple summers and that was sooo much fun, it was like 5 minutes from my house and we just had a blast.

The Blues Brothers is a great movie, should be sweet to see it on the big screen. I remember when we were kids and the second movie was "Zombie", man I was scared for a week after that night....haha

Have fun if you go!!!

I wish I had time and resources to open up a drive in theater. All you need is a big lot, a decent wall or billboard, and the audio equipment. Charge $10 a car and give them one free popcorn and I think I would do okay. But, land costs a premium down here so I would probably have much better luck in MI trying it...

I live in the town with the only drive in in northern California, and I used to think everywhere had drive-ins. A few years ago, they had a cruise come though our town, and the put on the animated movie CARS, and AMERICAN GRAFFITI. IT was a great time.:tmb

The nearest one to us is about an hour away. I believe that it is still open. For a while a couple of the ones in Grand Rapids still had thier screens and speaker posts. I thought that they could just put in some concession trailers an porta pots. All they would have to worry about it ticket sales and projector.

There used to so many here in the Chicago area. Now there are only a few drive in movie theaters left in the Chicagoland area. Whats cool about tonight is its only 4 bucks for adults to see 2 movies.....good deal.

Actually, the Rustic on RT. 146 is still open, but only open seasonal.

When did that happen? I drove buy there a couple of weekends ago and they were showing District 9 and some other movies. It wasn't xxx

There were two on 146. The rustic and the other one that has been closed for a long time. The one that is closed is probably the one you are thinking of.

We had one here in Kearney NE, but last year a tornado came through and destroyed it. They decided not to rebuild and to sell the land. Pretty sad. I always thought about buying it, but was never brave enough.

We went and had a great time. Went to the Dog n Suds for a retro drive in burger meal. Then off to the drive in Theatre ... we had a 2nd row spot in the center. Backed the truck up to the screen. Threw the skateboard ramps in the back along with a crapload of sleeping backs and pillows and we had a nice bed to lay up in. Its was great under the stars. A cheap night of fun everyone there had their own little picnic going. Because of them playing animal house as one of the movies along with the blues brothers there were some people dressed up with Togas.....I was laughing my butt off. They were walking everywhere. Even brought some rcs....I have a pic or two to throw up.

Blues Bros. and Animal House! I wish I could've gone.

There's a theater down the street from me and for like a couple months, every Saturday they played an old movie for like $2 a ticket or something. I only managed to get down there once, saw Robocop. It was fun. The last movie they played was Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome but I missed it cuz I was out of state :(

Never been to a drive-in. Seen a few all run down.
Kinda odd to see a giant decorative cement wall in a clearing. Kinda sad too.
