Clodbuster Body Restoration

Well the other day a guy gave me clodbuster body so Ive decided to make it my project for the time being. I started out by taking off all the old decals, then I started stripping the paint off. For stripping paint I like to use Walmarts "Great Value" heavy duty over cleaner, its just as good as easy off and cheaper. I like to let it set for about 30 mins to an hour and scrub it with a brush and repeat if needed. After a few hours its was looking new again. My next step was to build up a layer of primer to have somthing to work with when I sand it smooth. Il have more updates coming.

What it looked like when I got it:

Yeah it looks like that oven cleaner really works wonders. That's gonna come in handy when I need to re paint mine!

That oven cleaner is some mean stuff lol. I've used it to strip paint and chrome. The only time I've had trouble with it was I got an old clod body that had many layers of paint, I think it was about 3 or 4 heavy coats of paint and it took forever to get about 50% of the paint off.

oven cleaner usually takes hobby paints off, it's the krylon and those type of paints it has troubles with. That new ''made for plastics'' paint is really hard to get off once it's setup for a while. When it gets real tough brake fluid is really the only way to cut into it. Fill up a container and submerge the body for a week and it comes off.

I've used Easy Off oven clean to strip the blue annodizing of the TXT option chassis and that was easy it just wiped right off.

Anyone considering using oven clean wear gloves and goggles and be near water if it gets on your arm or something it burns like the dickens!

Hmmm...Never had that problem of burning your skin. I use the Fume Free Oven Cleaner. Just lay your part down and spray and let soak and whipe off 15 to 30 minutes later.

Yep!! that's the blue can. It's not as potent. I used it last year on a chrome rollbar and it works. It may not be as effective as what you guys want, but I'm happy with it becoz your not breathing in chemical fumes which is most important to ones health. Particularly when you have little ones around in the house that's always my main concern.

Well this is just the thread I need. My body needs some serious work. Never knew you could use oven cleaner. I've used that stuff before...to clean ovens, lol. I thought it would eat right through a clod body so never thought to use it. I remember having to hold my breath while using that crap, its instant coughing if you inhale the fumes from that stuff.

The heavy duty oven cleaner is great for stripping paint of hard body's. I've done a few clod body and I haven't seen It effect the bodies at all. Just spray it on it and let sit for a little bit. I've found it's good to make sure it dosent dry on the body, it seems to slow down the process of getting the paint off.

Most of the small scrapes and scratches I was able to build up a layer of primer and fill them in. However there was deeper scraps on the window trim that took some creative sanding to fix lol.

one thing to remember is that watch what your spending.
A clod body can be bought new cheap, so don't blow to much time and money fixing up an old one when you can start fresh cheaper in the end.

True. If you just need the white body part and have all your chrome and grill and gate you can get a new one for like 30 something bucks. BUT you don't get the satisfaction of sanding painting priming etc. that I really like to do. I think it's fun. I've done it both ways, bought new and repainted old, it just depends on my mood and how much free time I have.
