smallest pinion you can fit...which is a 9t i believe...
the motor and esc wont like it with anything higher...which is a bit of a bummer, since the 9t kinda kills the speed (and fun) with it...watch the temp of the motor and esc often though...
i ran the stock vxl motor and esc combo and it had power delivery issues...where the throttle was inconsistent...cogging at times and full power at times...didnt make for a very fun driving experience...9t pinion...
then i ran orion 2050kv 1/8 motor with vxl esc...ended up frying my vxl esc...this is a known problem, even with the stock vxl motors, so i chalked it up to that...(that was a mistake)...
so i ran the orion motor, with a castle mamba monster esc...still 14t pinion...weird cogging (which didnt occur with the vxl), and after a few minutes, the esc literally burst into flames...i guess the amps running through the esc was too much...
i didnt understand why the orion motor/mamba monster combo couldnt handle it, since it's used in the kyosho madforce, and it works fine in there. with 4s, and i was running 3s max..so i pop in a castle 2650, run a mamba monster esc, and 14t pinion and all is well...i run it on anything from 2s to 4s lipo, and no heat (or fire) issues...your best bet to run clod sized tires is to run 1/8 electronics in it...i go with castle, but i'm sure the cheaper stuff, hobbyking/nitrorcx/etc. would work as well...
realize you'll probably have to upgrade the driveshafts also...the stock ones wont like the strain from more power and bigger tires, especially the rears...mip is an option (what i went with), but tekno makes another one that's a bit cheaper...
please dont think i'm trying to discourage you from putting clod tires on your slash, but i want to share the hardships (especially financially with my burnt electronics) i went through with mine...in the end, it is very fun, but takes a bit more than just slapping clod tires on...
