clod-o-slash?!?

i copied orange pedeanaut who converted his 4x4 stampede with a slash4x4 chassis/driveshaft and clod tires...i thought it was neat, and was gonna buy the parts to convert mine over, then someone on clod talk was selling his slash for cheap, so i decided to just get another truck and convert that over to clod tires...

i received it yesterday and started working on it this morning...this was to be a basher monster truck, since most of my other ones are for racing...i put most of the parts that were disassembled for shipping together, and put on rc4wd wideners on a set of txt rims with big joes on them that i had lying around...i tried to get away from using the wideners, but the tires hit the chassis when the suspension compressed...initially i wasnt going to run the front or rear slash bumpers, and was going to pick up the smaller stampede ones, but i think they go great with the body and monster truck look...

the body on there was off a clod, but i'll just use that on this until it gets trashed, then buy a new lid for it...

servo, esc, and receiver is in, but the motor is toast, so i still have to put one in there, but i'll do that when i figure out what's the smallest pinion i can run in there...

here's some pics of it...

hmmmm open wheelwells up, make some chassis skirts and paint lid orange then it'll look like Jayson's rig.

lol...you know me too well will...i have some scrap lexan for the side skirts already...and i have a new can of orange paint waiting as well...just have to decide on a body...but it'll probably go on after this one gets really trashed...

What is the wheelbase with those tires on it ?

Do you intend to put traditional clod tires on, like stock clod or rumbles ?

looks awesome Jay ! agree on opening the wheel wells up a touch but should be a blast to run :emot151:

wheelbase is 12.75"...just like a stock 4x4 slash...

i guess i could put some stock clod tires on, but i have those big joes lying around that i cant use for racing, so it'll probably stay on...

dont worry tom, i was gonna cut the wheel wells up a bit more...it was just put on there quickly for a quick shot...gonna try to be able to give it at least a shakedown run before the weekend is up, but it's a bit hard for me this week, since i'm working the late shift as well as being on-call the whole week...

Very Very different, but it looks cool...I cant wait to see how it runs, i think the bumpers fit the truck too and you can probably bash the crap outta this truck. should be strong

thanks sean...

today, i got a 9t pinion in there, along with the reedy 3300kv motor...esc stays cool, but motor warms up a bit...not too hot, but i wasnt playing for that long either...will try to do more testing tomorrow and see how it'll hold up...a 1/8 motor would make it much more fun, but it drives pretty good at the moment...i did have to take the spur out and crank the slipper to it's tightest setting...

i might just end up taking the big joes off and putting some normal clod tires on...the original set of rumbles with their lower profile might work good in this application...

then i had a spare wraith cage lying around and got some ideas...it'd match the wheelbase perfectly...hmmmm

Jayson have a 2600 to 3000kv 1/8th scale motor (long can) w/ 5mm shaft around?
I think one of those on 2s would be the bomb

actually, i do have a castle 2650kv motor lying around...

or maybe put the 2650 in my mad force and put the orion 2050 in the slash, since that's a basher and not a racer...the orion doesnt seem as smooth a motor as the castle one...

any idea what pinion to use on it? i dont have a selection of 32p 5mm shaft pinions, so i'd rather just get one and be done with it rather than messing with different ratios...

I think I'd start with close to stock ratio 13 or a 14t if I had one of those as the long cans have the torque

how many of the wraith cages do you have? lol!!! Can't wait to see this bad boy in person. I think she will run good with the clod tires.

3 wraith cages now...i always keep meaning to make a scaler with one, but it always finds itself onto a monster truck...

anyway- got to do more runs with it...it is definitely a fun basher...speed could be more, but motor was getting pretty warm on 3s...it wasnt blistering hot, but i think it's at its limit with the 9t pinion...speed wasnt blistering fast, but it wasnt painfully slow either...i'll be putting in a more torquey motor and see how it goes from there...

the big joes do make it easy to get over obstacles...i thought they were glued on, but i uess they werent, as they started coming off after a little while...gonna have to shoe-goo them on before the next outing...anyway, here's some vids i took of it today...surprisingly, it made it up a pretty steep hill...of course, the video was only recording when it was struggling to make it up, so the footage isnt when it did make it...lol...

hills..., they never look half as steep on camera :mad

Doesn't need to be much faster, just more oomph

anyway, i moved the orion 2050 motor over from my mad force kruiser into this truck...the mad force now has a castle 2650kv motor in it, and the throttle is SOOOOOOOO much smoother...going to be much easier to control and modulate for our racing series...

after much debating, i used a 14t pinion...the former vids show a 9t, but with a 540 can 3300kv motor...that setup still got the motor hot after a few minutes of running...this setup now runs extremely cool...i tested it only briefly, but neither the esc or motor was even warm...both were still cool, where with the old setup, the esc and motor would be quite warm by then...

the speed and punch is pretty good with 3s...i never tried a 2s setup yet, but i plan to mostly bash with 3s in this truck anyway...

vid doesnt show it, but it was doing wheelies initially...the slipper started to slip, so i have to take it apart and crank it down more tomorrow...on the traxxas esc, i read on another forum to use a 1500uf 16v low ESR capacitor to help control heat with the esc...i know my associated sc700BL esc uses capacitors on the battery leads as well, so i figure i might as well do it...the former write up i saw only used one capacitor, but since the associated one used two, i just did two as well...i dont know if that helped make it run cooler, but it sure doesnt even get warm now...
