Clod axle build tips?

Just about to build my first set of clod axles (feel like a kid on Christmas) and am wondering if there are any general or secret tips or suggestions you have before I build them.

Here is one I think alot of people miss.

Pay alot of attention to how the axle tube braces fit. Their alignment is important to free spinning axles. Most of the time when you tighten either the top or bottom mounting screws that hold them to the axle housing/C hub you will notice that you kind of have to force the brace into place to get the other hole to line up. Its usually not off by much, but even that little bit of having to force them into place causes binding in the knuckles and potentially the driveshafts. I usually spend a little time on each one tweaking them with pliers till they line up without needing any extra persuasion.

Again its a small step most wont care to pay attention too.. but it definitely helps.

That and look into a quick change axle tube mod. Nothing is worse than breaking an axle tube and having to tear down your entire axle to get to the screws inside the case that hold the axle tubes on.

There are alot of methods for doing it, but this is my personal favorite:

i'd also cut the steering stops and grind down the back of the knuckles for more steering...

maybe add some axle braces since you got stuff apart...

Thanks guys I was wondering when some mods would post, seems like everything else has been modded.

On that guide it says there are 15 others to do. Do I just do that mod to the 4 holes on each axle in the pic or all the screw holes?

Just the other axle tube screw holes. All the external screws have easily accessible nuts to thread the screws into. The stock build have you put a screw/nut through each of the axle tube mounting holes. If you break a tube you have to undo the entire axle to get inside them to access either the screw or nut depending on how you assembled them. This mod allows you to just remove 4 external screws and replaces the tube.

yes... after you do that one screw, there are fifteen more to do.
each tube has four screws and there are four tubes; equals sixteen screws.

Okay makes sense after reading and looking at some axle pics, thanks! Anyone prefer the tapping method over the one with blind nuts? I think the tapping would be a little easier for me but what do you guys think?

The tapping method really works fine too and is alot less work. I just never felt as comfortable with it. I have have the screws actually pull out with the tapping method in the past (not that it happens alot, but it has) and it also makes it alot easier to cross thread and ruin your gearbox.

The nice thing with the tapping method though is that even if it gets cross threaded and ruined you can still always drill the holes out a little and do the blind nut mod down the road.

If I go with a 6-32 tap and down the road have issues, will the 4-40 blind nuts still fit fine or will the 6-32 be too big to securely hold them?

Okay guys I have my first question while building the axles.

Do the metal axle stays need to be screwed to the axle/tranny area? I have double checked my instructions and don't see anywhere that it says to attach them nor do I see the hardware to do so. Do I attach them and if so, what with? Thanks!

there's a small nub meant for a screw on the trans case...you use a small self tapping screw to mount it...

I'm resurrecting my old thread - any chance any of you have the tutorial in the link that Mo' posted saved somewhere? It is dead. I have only done the tube mod once and can't remember all the steps to do. A guide with pics and advice would be helpful again - thanks.
