Chrome on clod wheels

Hey guys, I was wondering how you get that chrome plating of clod wheels ? Ive been up in the air about the wheel and tire combo I want to run on my GP . I really want to run the clod wheel and tires, and since I read some of Hawnmt's post I think I might try the steering knuckle trick and see what happens!!......muuhhaaahhaaa!!! Anyways..haha but as usual I'm doing my research to see what I'm getting my self into

I've read that bleach will remove it, and brake fluid or oven cleaner may work as well. There may be a primer of some sort underneath it which you can remove with plastic model paint remover or possibly even the brake fluid.

BTW Why are you removing the chrome? I'm not sure if the plastic underneath looks like the regular white clod wheels or not. If you do remove the plating I'd like to see pics of what they look like afterwards.

I've used Purple Power. it's a degreaser that you can find in the automotive section at Walmart. You just soak the part in it for like an hour then the chrome washes off clean. If you partial dip the part in it you will actually see where the waterline was because it will only remove the chrome up to that point. You can leave the part in there for weeks with no effect on the plastic.

Wow that sound easy enough..thanks Hawnmt I think I'm gonna give your knuckle trick a try..I really want to run the clod wheel and tire setup, gonna shave the tires to lighten them up and give them the scale MT look

quickpt, I wanna remove the chrome so I can paint them. I heard paint won't stick to the chrome that good and will most likley chip off with the chrome

I have used Easy Off oven cleaner works great and does not damage plastic..works very fast may need to spray more than once to get all chrome plating off rinse well after and dry...Also try full strenth simple green. Submerge them in a bucket of simlple green over night chrome plating should peel right off next day, also will not damage plastic and is a little safer than the easy off but does take longer. :trk
