I like the PC black frame too....unless u are doing a replica truck that has a different color chassis. Black 4 links really set it off too.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm leaning towards black PC. I've polished a set of motorcycle wheels in the past and that was labor intensive. I'd imagine this one would be too with all the cutout sections.

Developing some skills!

So I am starting to get better at this center drilling thing. I had to stop by the LHS to buy more rod which I was surprised to find that it was cheaper than ordering from McMaster. I also bought a center drill bit set from HF which has made a world of a difference!

I've completed the four bottom links and I am now starting on the top four links. I should have them complete this week.

I am also almost done with the crossmembers. Just a few more to go!

I also finally received my hardware, so I put together the axles.

Things are now going pretty smoothly. I am getting anxious to get this one going. I am still on the fence about powdercoating or polishing. I was leaning towards PC until I saw the Behemoth pics just recently posted and I really like the way all the silver looked.

Look ma, i did it!

I made some good progress this past weekend. I finished all of the crossmembers and 4-link bars. WOOHOO, no more drilling and tapping. :emot179:

I did my first mock up last night with the axles hooked up. I have the chassis put together temporarily with mis-matched hardware. I placed an order with McMaster last night for some stainless fasteners. In the meantime, I am going to start polishing up the chassis plates as I've decided to go in that direction. I also placed an order for some axle stiffeners from Level-3rc.

Here are some updated pics as she stands. Enjoy!

What can you tell me about this? Do you have a pic of said bits? Do you use them differently?

Chassis is looking great! Bet you're glad you're done drilling and tapping rod. LOL

Here is a picture of the center drill bit. It is basically a bit with a large shank body and a small tip for drilling a pilot hole. The advantage to this bit is that since the shank is larger in diameter it resists walking away from the center while drilling. This will give you an accurate on center pilot hole to follow up with the regular drill bit. If you try to drill the hole for the M3 tap just using the 2.5mm drill bit, it will walk on you and you will end up with an off center hole.

Great work. This is a fabulous custom build. I applaud your effort. I vote red chassis plates.
Boy the crickets are alive and well in my thread. LOL!
You should copy this thread into the Clod Forum. Very few people visit this forum. You would get so many more views there. Clod people want to and need to see this build.

Thanks for the compliments and thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to try that, but I'm not too sure how to go about copying this thread into the Clod forum.

McMaster Shipping

I used to order a lot of stuff from McMaster, and I remember never having any trouble with shipping costs. The last two orders I placed with them have left me wanting a little more from their shipping standards/policies. You will find that when you check out and pay that they do not provide a shipping cost until UPS actually comes by and picks up the shipment. In my mind I'm thinking, "What the ****!?" I don't totally agree with that policy because in this day and age I think they should be able to give accurate shipping cost when you check out. At least that is my opinion.

Shipping costs, at least for me, play a big factor in my decision to buy or not to buy. I got charged a lot for my aluminum rod that I ordered from them. Had I known my shipping cost up front I would have arranged my order differently. I called their customer service and eventually got a refund for the shipping.

Axle Update.

I had an extended 5 day weekend this past weekend, but I really didn't get to do much tinkering. It was my daughter's 3rd birthday and I pretty much dedicated my free time to her the whole time. I did receive parts in the mail from CPE, Level3-rc, and McMaster. I got in some tire foams and servo from CPE, some 1/4" Al spacers and SST M3 fasteners from McMaster, and some axle stiffeners from Level3-rc.

Late last night I did get a sliver of time to do some kitchen table axle building! This first picture shows the axle stiffeners from Level3-rc, the spacers, M3 hardware, and the axle 4-link brackets I designed.

These two images show the front and rear view of the parts installed on the axle. I was very pleased with the intallation and final product. It feels very stiff and sturdy! I like it......two thumbs up!!

This last image shows an overall view of an assembled axle. I am using the CPE upper 4-link mount for this build.
