Callin' This One The...

Thanks to Toms 2.2 "Torsion Stick" style build up, I decided to try a scratch build one myself. Gonna call this one the "MISFIT".The parts are simple enough. Get a length(wheel base is up to personal preference) of 1/2in aluminum C channel, a pair of Clod axles, tires, radio/RX, ESC, motors, and some free time (this was the hard part).

I started off by going through the parts I already had. And even tough I had gotten these parts through numerous trades on the board, MY WIFE still says I spend tooooo much money on this hobby. Well TOOOOO BAD for her :rof (as I hope she never reads this). All I really needed to buy was the C channel, got a 4ft length from the local Metal Supermarkets for $6.00. And then bought some 5mm cap head bolts with locknuts from my local Canadian Tire Store (remember I'm in Canada). The rest of the parts I already had.

I started with a plain set of axles, total rebuild with TTR CVD's and bearings to come. Gonna be 4WS on this one. Sorry, this ones a lil fuzzy.

A set of cut IMEX K-Rocks on Mad Force wheels. Again got in a trade.

The chassis is simple, all you have to do is pick a wheel base. I chose 16" for this one. The main mount for this chassis runs through the stock steering mount, or upper 4-link mount. With a stabilizer mounted to the diff case to strengthen the chassis.

C-channel cut to 16" W-B

Diff mounted stabilizer

Upper link mount with aluminum sleve, machined to recieve an 5mm cap head bolt.

At this point I have to wait fot the TTR CVD's, but here is a quick mock up of the chassis.

I also have a set of Intgey Lathe 55T motors on order as well as an Intellispeed 8T ESC. I also have a set of 9 tooth pinions and ADJ. motor mounts that I just bought fron another member. This will be my first Crawler only based truck that I have built. So far this design, although not my own is simple to build, and the cost of material so far is at $9.00. The electronics cost my wife still doesn't know yet, and so far I am safe.

Updates to come. LMK what you think :willy

Looks good so far! What size is the hex on those wheels? Those wheels/tires go great together.

19mm hex, gonna be tricky in the conversion, but having a friend with a machine shop I can use sure helps....

Also got to working on a set of gear case covers. I know that I am not the first, but here's my set.....

Still have a few tweeks in mind, the rest to come in a bit.....

Looking good! Yes, other than the simplicity of this 'chassis', it's also dirt cheap! :willy

At this point the G.C is about 3.25". Depening on the tires, that I end up with It will be somewhere between 5-6" of clearance. And the 16" W.B should work out quite well

Be sure and keep us updated... I wanna see how you like the performance... I have some aluminum out there I just need some motivation LOL

Will do. I got started on some aluminum axle braces to mout the servos, and RX/ESC on to. I want to have them sit paralel to the axle tubes. I know that RC4WD sells them, but I wanted to try and make them myself first.

Not much going on , still waiting on HD servos and axles. Tried the paralell axle stays with not much success. I gotta go buy a metal bender :banghead :banghead . Slapped the K-ROCKS on to get a rough G.C height, came in about 5.5"

So far not too bad in the articulation departmnet also. Considering there are no shocks or links, this is looking pretty sweet IMO

From what I have read, the more this style chassis is used the more it will flex.

The only other delima I can see is choosing a body. Alot of people seem to be using the Bronco or the Rubicon body, Thinkin' a little different, it is called the "MISFIT". I robbed an old HUMMER body off of another truck for a quick mock up.

There would still be a bit of chopping to get the HUMMER body to fit right, but now the more I look at it. Not too sure I'll use it either :banghead :banghead OH well, looking forward to more parts hopefully soon :( . Til then.......

That Hummer body looks great on there!

Got any more pics of that other clod in the background with moab tires?

Thats actually truck #4, with the original set of TTR axles I did the review on. That build up will be coming soon, but here's a spy shot.

New thread for this one coming soon. It's keeping me busy while I'm waiting for parts.

Your truck #4 looks great! I like the paint scheme/colors! I'm looking forward to the build up topic!

How do you plan to mount the body to the stick chassis?

Gonna put a dual post mount at the front and a single at the rear. They'll both run through spine of the chassis, single bolt up through the bottom. That way it wont effect the flex of the chassis.

Parts list to date.... So far the HD servos are in, Integy Lathe 55T's and Intellispeed 8T are here. Mocked up the body mounts, and figured with some trimmin' I'm going to use the Urban Hummer body(new one on order), so that will be here in a few days. Color scheme to be determined????? Gotta figure on a tribute to the "BOYS" over seas, something fitting. Renamed the "URBAN MISFIT" Thinking on a "STEALTH" black like Kenny did on his last Clod, not to rob a design. I know he went old school with the flat black and flames, but that black looks real slick, so we'll see what happens
Just waiting on the 9th pinions, and adjustable motor mounts from highster to get the K-Rocks rollin' More pics to come....Hope you like it so far!

Aww dude you got the Duratrax 8t and Integy 55s? That's the same gear I want to thorw in my Spider. Be SURE to report on how the Duratrax 8T does. Like how smooth it is, how hot it gets, everything.

The one thing that was bugging me is the 1A BEC. That is fine for one servo but some people say for dual high torque servos you need more. I don't know. Let me know if the servos turn like they should cuz I really want to the Duratrax 8T instead of the Rebel 2 (which has a 5A BEC).

Last thing, how long till we get the scoop on truck #4? I already have some Qs!

Patience Grass Hopper, that one's coming soon. It's still in the trail and error stage. I want to try and to get this one done first.

jagg,
you mean thats the complete chassis??? no shocks or links? that is genius! very minimalist and easy to build. i gotta try this setup. :)

Yeah that's it!

You just have to find a spot for the battery, Rx, and ESC! That's where the axle brace plates come in!

I've read that they will get more articulaton as they 'break in' too...

Cheap and simple, well atleast the chassis is. Electonics are startin to add up though :( . Still tryin' to figure out where everything will sit.
