Building a Barbarian

My local track is running a winter solid axle points series, with races twice a month. I've always had Clods, but since we have separate classes now for shaft driven and Clod based trucks, I have an excuse to build a new truck!

I picked up a carbon fiber CPE Barbarian chassis from a local racer. I ordered axles and transmission from eBay (SMT10 take-offs), and I have a Trackstar 3800 (relabeled Hobbywing Quicrun) combo sitting around that I'll use to get this running.

I found a new old stock Parma Bel Air body at my local hobby shop, so I'm going with Avenger for the theme. I've always liked that truck. I'm still waiting on some parts to complete it, so here's how it stands for now.

Made a bit more progress. I received the upper link mounts, so I was able to mock up where the links will attach. I have a transmission from a SMT10 with a slipper on the way, and ordered Jconcepts Firestorm tires in Gold compound, and black Tribute wheels that I'll paint a silver steel color. I also have some hardware and spacers ordered from Screw Loose on the way. I plan on getting some more parts to strengthen the axles over the next week. Then it's time to fabricate some Velcro body mounts. MCI is making some Avenger stickers for the body. I just threw on these 2.2s to see how the stance looks. The sway bars are really stiff and will need adjusting.

More parts! My wheels and transmission came in today. Installed the transmission, just need to pick up steel gears from my local hobby shop. I have to say the wheels look really nice. Definitely a good design, they feel sturdy and I like the option of different widths in one package. I do plan on painting and detailing them. Can't wait to get the tires.

More progress! Received my hardware from Screw Loose, and the Firestorms arrived too.

The tires are a little bigger than I expected, but I really like the tread design. Here they are next to Destroyers.

With the 18mm wideners installed, there is some rubbing of the tire against the lower 4 links at full steering throw. I'll have to use the wider setup, or move the links inside the chassis.

I also was able to get some paint on the body. Nothing fancy, but once I get the Avenger stickers it should dress it up a bit.

Next I need to work on the steering setup and body mounts, but I have a good feeling this will be ready for the next points race on January 8th.

I love the Firestorms more every time I see them. I don't like the proportions of the Pro Line tires.

Agree completely. The square profile of the Destroyers kind of kills the look. They do work well though, especially on carpet. I'm curious to see how the Firestorms compare. I got the medium Gold compound.

Made a trip to the hobby shop and picked up a few more small things I needed to complete this.

I'll use this Savox servo for now since it was just sitting around. It's a little slow but will do for now. Also picked up a Ofna heavy duty servo saver.

I switched out the 18mm wideners included with the wheels for the 25mm ones. They don't seem as wide as I thought they would, and they're actually narrower than Brawlers with 17mm offset on Clod axles. This helps the clearance issue though.
Now all that's left is to do is make some Velcro body mounts and attach everything with the correct hardware and thread lock.I also have to work out the binding issue with the sway bars.

Would you mind sharing the part number of that steering linkage?

Sorry but I tossed the packaging already. It's made by Integy. Not sure how well it will work. I don't like the amount of play the steering has as the link moves up and down, but I'm going to try some o rings to tighten everything up a bit.

Picked up some more parts from the shop while I was racing Tamiya Minis tonight. Got STRC front C hubs and knuckles, and Hot Racing hardened steel lightweight gears. I have some Boom racing inner axle tubes on the way too in order to bullet proof the axles as much as possible.

It's a runner! Received my battery tray today, and threw in a receiver to test everything. I just drove around inside the living room, but I can tell I'm going to like the way this handles. The 3800 has more power than I thought it would, and could be sufficient for our short indoor race track. I see why steel gears are recommended. Just hitting the brakes too hard was enough to ruin the plastic gears on my first run. Luckily I already bought the HR gears, so took a few minutes to put them in, and it's back running again. I'm hoping to get around to the body mounts tomorrow.

With all your weight there in the center, like you said, it's gonna handle great! I didn't aim for any kind of weight distribution with my build and just "eyeballed" it.

Coming along really nicely. Are you going to use those body mounts or a different type?

I am going to make some Velcro body mounts for it. I don't like making holes in bodies if I don't have to. I've found that the Velcro body mounts you can buy do not have enough surface area to hold a body tight. I'm going to make some like I have on my Spider Man truck from aluminum rod and 1/4" lexan.

CPE makes machined links and sway bars like on your Spider-Man truck for the barbarian. I have them and they are pretty sporty.
