Bounty Hunter Clod-O-Pounder Stock Class race truck

With the TXT clone on the way I wanted to finish this project up before it got here. It's basically my CPE Terminator Bounty Hunter changed over to a custom Ground Pounder chassis setup. For those that may remember this isn't my first foray into the Clod-O-Pounder territory, I had first done it with my Cartoon Network race truck. But this time rather than just trying to fit Clod axles on a GP chassis, I would mod the chassis for better performance with the Clod axles.

Racing it with the Terminator chassis:

I hesitated doing this project because the Terminator setup was running so well lately but I needed that chassis for a set of built up Clod axles I've had sitting around. I first bought a set of GP chassis plates but when I saw Joe(MiRatlhed) had a bent up set of plates he had taken off the "troops" truck I asked to buy them from him. For the price of shipping I got the entire chassis(and a bunch of other stuff) and immediate set off on cutting them up. In the end I cut off a good portion of the front end so the axles could cycle through and although I could've kept the rear I cut it to match the front.

After getting everything fitted up with new links, a battery/electronics plate, and new shocks, I tore the truck back down for paint and spent the last week getting it back together. Here's how it sits now.

Specs:

Chassis: modified Redcat Ground Pounder
Axles: Tamiya Clodbuster with adjustable motor mounts, Tamiya stock silver can motors, and 21t pinions
Tires/rims: shaved Imex Pullers on stock Clodbuster rims
Shocks: HPI MT2 with internal springs
ESC: Traxxas XL-5 esc
Battery: Tenergy 7.2V 4200mah sport pack
Body: HPI Bounty Hunter

Suspension at rest

I really like wat you did Kent. I thought Tom was on the right track when he trimmed the front of the chassis but this build turn out great... it almost looks like a small Stallion chassis mixed with the ECD chassis lol. I think this is a great idea for a Clod.

Great job!

That truck looks LEAN AND MEAN! I have a GP chassis right now and debating on using TXT or CLOD axles? Either way your build will be a hard act to follow! : )

What kind of speeds do you get with stock motors and 21t gears?
Here's some vids of it. This class still uses NiMH so when there a lipo in it it's that much faster. You be surprised with the speed increase in a stock Clod just by going to 18t pinions. Best part about it you can use a cheapo Traxxas XL-5 for an esc and it doesn't even get warm.

New Shoes

Got a set of the current version(hard compound) Rumbles on my Super Stock Class race Clod. The Imex Pullers were ok on grass but absolutely horrible on dirt.

I cut and shaved the rear tires quite a bit. I rolled the edges and shaved the sidewalls in order to get the rear to swing around and slide better. The latest hard compound shaves pretty smooth and doesn't require buffing.

With the front tires I want more lateral bite so while I did shave the edges I kept the corner sharp. I basically shaved back the edge of the cleats about 1/8" so the tires appears a little more narrow than stock. I did cut the treads a little so their height is more uniform to the carcass of the tire.

We had a race on grass yesterday and the new tires work much better than the Imex Pullers they replace. I definitely had more traction and the rear slid out ok. I'm happy with the way it performs, now I just have to get a little more speed. BTW since this truck is light, I am running the tires without the foams and they have no problem holding the truck up, even shaved.

The center tread area is softer than the sidewalls by a large margin. So I stayed away from that area completely but I did shave quite a bit off the edges, especially the corners, so the tire would appear more rounder than stock.

Looks good Kent!

I need to get a set of the newer compound Rumbles..I have one of the earlier smaller sets that dont shave well...I would like to try to get sum before May if I can. How much of the sidewall did you shave away? just enough to erase the words?

A lot of the carpet racers don't like the hard compound because of tire chatter on turns. For me, since we race on grass and dirt, the compound plays less a part in traction(tread design does) but more on suspension. So you have to think about when determining which compound Rumbles is better for you and the type of surfaces you plan to run on.

As far as shaving, I shaved off enough to remove the lettering on the sidewalls but it was on the corners where I took a lot off. When you feel Rumbles you can tell the corners have a whole lot more material, then the sidewalls, and the thinnest is the center of the tread area. What I basically did was try to get the thickness more uniform throughout the tire. The sidewalls and corners are about the same thickness and they are still a little thicker than the tread area. It's really hard to tell by the pictures but if you look at the faux "cut lines" in between the cleats you can see I shaved into those a little as well as the cleats, about an 1/8". That rounded the tire out slightly.

We race on dirt and grass like you all do out there... even if I go race with the No Limit guys we race out doors so the harder compound should work better for me...I would like to try shaving the corners just a bit to help the truck swing around too.. we have actually designed our series around the RCMTC-HI group

I like the way the truck is looking now Kent! Those cuts/shave patterns are so uniform :cool

I have more issues with my softer tires on carpet believe it or not. I pulled the foams out of my hard set before i even tried them. I actually like the way my Berzerker handles with the harder compound on carpet.

Thanks Jerry. It's good the hear as much feedback as possible on the Rumbles. Only myself and Jayson are running the latest compound here and we both like it. I have an uncut/unshaved set on my Mad Force VE and that truck was running perfect yesterday. I had already made the recommendation to switch the compound back on the next run Rumbles but I can't say it'll happen. I think from the way things are going it would be nice if RC4WD carries both compounds with different stock numbers since they both seems to have found followings. But since there are still folks who want the softer compound I still hope they change the compound on the next run and notify us that they plan to do so so those who want the current compound can buy them now.

I absolutely love the way you cut those rumble tires Hawn, makes me wanna get a set cut just like the rear, and a set cut just like the front to see how they'd do on carpet, haha.

That would be a great idea for them to carry both compounds with separate stock numbers!
