Bounty Hunter Barbarian.

I had seen pics of modified Wheely Kings, being a bit of a HPI fan.

After several years watching Monster Jam with my son and having RC Cars as a hobby, thought I'd look further into these modified MTs. With much help from this forum I built my first WK modified MT.

Now the issue is we both want to use it! So, it's time to make another one. However this time I was thinking I'd like to build a different type of truck. Something with a little more CNC bling!

With help I got pointed in the direction of Axial with possibly a Barbarian chassis.

I managed to find one locally online second hand in near new condition with all alloy upgrades! I thought wow this is great. Being new to Axial I checked out prices for alloy hopups and just the diff's alone where like $200 each. I thought this thing is is a bargain! When I saw the truck I noticed there where no brand names on it anywhere. I figured it had been fully upgraded with cheap alloy parts and well the price was right so I bought it anyway.

Once I got it home, did a little research and have realised it's a cheap rip off copy. :(
Initially I was disappointed BUT I realised it may be perfect for what I was after because it suits my budget.

The truck came with the Castle Mamba Max pro ESC, Traxxas motor and Savox servo. Will be using the Turnigy servo basically because it suits my colour scheme.

Had a little progress yesterday. Stripped the truck down, painted the diff's however have decided to order some composite diff's and the HPI diff gears to unlock the diff's. Will keep the alloy knuckles.

It's probably the first time somebody has swapped an alloy diff to fit a plastic diff and also swapped a Savox servo out for a Turnigy lol.

In the process of getting some RC4WD Rumble tires but I live in Australia so that isn't easy. Also chasing a clear Bounty Hunter body if anybody has one. I currently have a blue Wheely King which I'm hoping may fit but will probably be a tad small.

I love Barbarian builds!

Can't wait to see more progress!
Erm, about that. I didn't end up going for the Barbarian simply due to living in Australia and the shipping costs.

Ended up getting the ST racing Izzila chassis, other upgrades where
HPI diff gears.
Clod wheels.
RC4WD Rumble tires (also very difficult to get in Australia due to shipping costs).
ST Racing 4 links.
Shocks with internal springs.

Parts arrived! Very happy with the chassis. Looks great.

But first job is to unlock the diff's.

Used the HPi spider gears. Packed with red grease. I initially put both internal washers into the diff but it felt very notchy. So removed one washer and it then felt perfect. Had some spare Fast Eddy bearings and replaced the stock diff bearings.

After doing the diff's I noticed with the adapters there wasn't much thread left for the wheels, so used shorter wheel hexs. Now they fit perfect. Just missing the steering knuckles.

After doing this, I've noticed the Losi SCTE wheel hexs may also be a perfect fit.

Onto the shocks, thought they may not be strong enough to do the trick. But I've swapped out the default spring with the stiffer one and added 35wt oil in the front 30wt in the rear to start with. Now they are looking like they are going to definatly be strong enough.

Very curious as to how these shocks will handle. Please keep us updated with the build and testing

Thanks guys.

Looks like I have a problem. The damn Wheely King Bounty Hunter body is way too small. What's the most common wheel base to go for? This truck has turned out to be 13.5 inches. I'm thinking about shortening it a little but not sure. I presume the 1/8th Bounty Hunter body would be to big.

The truck I built for my son turned out to be 11.5 inches from memory, and that was about the size I was after. Maybe a tad bigger. Once I get the wheels on I can probably get a better perspective to see if it needs shortening. Or if the larger bounty hunter body would fit.

Just read this thread from start to finish and this is going to be a really nice looking truck! The shocks have me very interested too, will be good to see how they hold up & how well they hold their shock oil...

Keep the updates coming :)

A nice WB for 1/10th is 12-13 if i were you i would try to get a new 1/10th body because the Bounty hunter WK body is actaully 1/12th....

Gave the Bounty Hunter a couple of quick test runs with an old bashing body. Waiting on the correct body from Team Tweaked. Anyway I stripped the pinion gear in no time. Replaced it and bent an axle all within about 5 minutes or so. I presume it's due the the truck not being a real Axial. However about 90% of the parts are going to be changed out by the time I'm done.

Ordered 2x packs of the Incision Wraith VDI Axle Shaft Set. Also ordered the Robinson Racing spur and pinion.

Very impressed with the shocks, however the oil that I filled them with is too thick. Going to swap it out with 25wt front and 20wt rear and see how that feels. Only issue they may have is that they may leak. Time will tell.

Had a little time yesterday so I added a wheely bar. Don't won't to wreck that Team Tweaked body. It's from a Thunder Tiger MT4. Fits really well, just misses the diff under full compression.

Managed to find some RC4WD Rumbles locally here in Australia from a member (DarkSammy) via the RCMT for sale forum. They are perfect. Also mounted up the sponsor panels.

Getting close now however still lots to do including shortening the rear. Just sat my sons Metal Mulisha body on there for a pic.
