So, you know instead of long pinions...
im not allowed to talk to you anymore!
:willy
seriously though, i plan to keep this one brushed for a while.
it seems to run pretty well in its current configuration.
with the 9t pinions it should have just a little more punch off the line.
this thing is so large that its not like there are a lot of places for me to run it, either.
so longevity wise, these motors should hold up for a while.
i built this specifically with the beach in mind. we go to the cape each year.
if i want more speed i can always step up to lipos, which i expect to do in the near future anyway.

Are those the 9.8" kongs ?
these kongs are around 7" i believe.
i think you are referring to the rc4wd demolishers; theyre over 9" tall.

It's true when then someone says that bigger tires do cause more problems. More stress on the axle tubes. You will also need a bigger servo. 200 oz at least. Even the pinion problem was adressed earlier but again; You now see the outcome. Good advice was given but ignorance shows it's way to the end costing more.:willy

Wow some great words from the new guy :rolleyes

Anyway gonna get onboard with Will in helping you spend the mortage since you tossed in its a beach runner :laugh BL !!! The only reason I went from brushed to BL was just a maintence thing it wasnt for speed or anything matter of fact I tuned everything down even. That sand is a pain and gets in places you wouldnt think! Unprotected motors will suffer:ack

Would a couple of those Outwears filters help save the motors from the sand? I've been thinking about picking up a couple...

kill two birds with one stone here...
im planing some sort of a foam filter for the motors.
i havent seen the Outwears, but ill check 'em out.
last year i ran my R7R and the WK in the sand with no ill effects.
i did clean the motors and re-lube things, though.

brushless is definitely in my future, but probably not on this one.
i think im gonna start with brushless in the R7R and then probably one of the TXTs.

you pay for shipping I'll send a turnigy 3000kv brushless over that I ordered by mistake I thought it was a long can not a standard length can. It has never been run, sitting in a box. I wasted 25 bucks, it'll cost as much to ship it back to HK so I kept it.

Then all you need to save for is a 5mm pinion and a 60a esc. You can get 32 pitch gears in 5mm shaft sizes. It should rock in a HPI WK based rig.

lol had to try :tong but 2 years ago I took my clod to the beach with brand new reedy motors and it last all of 5mins, needless to say not happy. Sand got into the can and just plain ate the brushes down to nothing. So yea least cover them up, like to see these outwears. My old tamiyas still use brushed and I used pantyhose lol but heh it worked.
ANyway be awesome to see some shots of this in the sand :tmb

so with the brushless, sand really isnt an issue?
thats definitely something to consider.
waterproof may not even be a big factor most of the time.

still, i think the clod is gonna stay the way it is for a little while...
but Bill has me thinking about the WKs!

well, finally got this thing back together for a run.
fixed the axle tubes, installed 9t pinions, rigged up some limiter chains and charged a couple 4200 packs.

i got a surprising amount of run time with the evx2.
(the last clod i had ran a super rooster, single pack and 12t speed gems. it only ran for a few minutes.)
over all speed is good enough for now. its controllable, but still fun.
that big rig sounds fierce on the pavement running the kongs and multiplex motors!
i really dont plan to give it much asphalt run time, though.

i know... :pics

but after i got it back home i decided to tear down and re-arrange some stuff.
i didnt like the battery packs sitting on top of each other in the rear.
i installed another battery tray in the front to even things out.
this should help it not squat so much in the back, and should help keep the batts cooler.
ill have to test it, but i think it will be better.
ill get some more pics up soon.
:tmb

not sure if you mentioned it but did you notice any need to reconfigure or change the shocks or spring rate? I have yet to run mine since I am afraid of breaking stuff off the git-go. I would rather build it once and build it bulletproof than to deal with the frustration.

im running stock wheely king shocks right now!
i used 'em for mock up because i had them, but they work ok.
i like the length, theyre soft but i doubt theyll hold up long at all.

...but i think im gonna ditch the kongs.
:ack
they might be more of a pain than theyre worth.
maybe ill stick 'em on one of my TXTs instead.

Hmmm, ditching the Kongs...ya'know I never even finished my masterpiece Kong Clod and I've already thought of the idea of also ditching the Kongs. I could tell from when I first got them that something was a bit odd of them. Some didn't match each other in size and the tires also didn't seem to be perfectly round either. This was a real bummer being I was already far into the project but now upon me getting back to finishing the truck I'm probably gonna be looking into some type of other Clod tire. I will have to have my suspension links turned down about a half an inch each due to needing a shorter wheelbase but that should pretty much do it. The tires I may use will most likely be the RC4WD Clod Traxtor Pulling Tires, mainly just for there Sooper Kewl Looks and it having a slightly large outter diameter than stock Clod tires. I know if I could only air them up successfully that I could get a really nice size tire out of them but the last time I tried to do air filled tires it turned out to be an epic fail. :tong

The Traxtors Do look cool, but may I suggest the B & H Clod tires also???:tmb

I was thinking of those (never had a set in hand yet of them) but the treads seem a bit too steep. I was thinking I could get a buzzy hovering like thing going on with using the Traxtors if I had some BL motors. I also started to think of the Clod Slingers and if I ran em with BL motors I could probably hear that howling sound real good like a 1:1 heh. I know if you got some decent power pretty much any Clod has a hovery like effect when the tires inflate. lol

between you, Savage, and my own experience, the kongs just dont seem to make for a "fun" truck.
i mean, i like building and tweaking almost as much as i like driving,
but i wanna be able to at least get some drive time in!

this was supposed to be a "cheap" basher build and i can see it getting out of hand with the kongs.
heck, Savage is destroying all aluminum parts and im surprised by my plastic stuff breaking.

i used to be able to run my old clod with all plastic axles and never break anything for years.
now im changing parts and fixing things after every run.
:bang

Now im thinking about a different tire but dont know what one, crappy part is I got the larger frame to match the kongs and im not really sure if a smaller tire is going to look right. Would help if their was more or should say better quality aftermarket parts for the clod instead of all these cheaply made parts.

our larger Rippers should be able to be adjusted by just moving the links more into the center. I believe the target wheelbase for Kong rigs is 16" so at the common Clod size tire truck being 14", all we gotta manage is a minor 1", to 1/12" or an even 2" to have a decent proportion of things. Personally I'm gonna look to remaining at a Clod size tire but ones with a larger OD. As mentioned if I can successfully air up a Clod size tire I know I'd be even more happy than just running a larger diameter size Clod tire. But if I still fail I know a larger Clod based tire should look quite nice.

........Unless one of you wanna grab a set of those like Waaaaaaaay to Biiiiiiiiiig Demolisher tires at over a Whopping 9 Inches!!! :tong

Sure try those and see what kinds of breakage we see! I have listed about every tire spec I can find in another thread but the problem I found is most are the narrow variety which suks, like to run teh moabs since proline makes good tires but not to keen on the narrow part...
