Best Sub-$100 servo for Short Course?

Hey guys, I'm looking for suggestions for servos to run in my SC10.. Speed & Torque are a must. Also Metal gears.. I ran a big race yesterday and did terrible, mainly because of my inability to turn.. Currently using a Traxxas 2075.. I don't have any brand preference.. so if it's JR, Hitec, Air, Savox.. whatever..

Thanks!

how 'bout the 200oz one that CPE sells?
its supposed to be good for monster trucks, so id imagine it would be great for a short course truck.

You might want to first make sure everything is tip top on your truck. The 2075 shouldn't have any issue moving the SC tires after reading it's specs.

Also check your radio settings to make sure the end points and if you have adjustable exponential that it is set correctly. I know my spektrum has three steering adjustments that can really put a negative effect on the steering if they are set wrong. One is a EPA but there is another that is a ATV that basically acts as an overall EPA. I had the EPA's cranked up to 125% but couldn't get my VTA car to turn. I'd have to go into 180 corners really wide just to make the turn.

ya i went thru this yesterday.. believe me.. lol.. 12 hours at the track.. I just want a new servo.. From what guys were telling me you need to crank down and shim the servo saver built into the sc10 bellcrank.. but then you want a servo with metal gears (which the 2075 is not).. I want something with like an .08 transit time.. I had one several years ago but sold it..

I messed with all the EPA's etc.. and by the end of the day I was finally getting Lock-to-Lock full steering both ways (first few heats it wasnt steering to the right all the way)..

The Traxxas servos do tend to lose their travel over time - I'm not sure why, but they do. The one in my slash wouldn't go to full right after a year in my old slash no matter what I did. The travel just went away.

I recommend the AE DS1015 - best servo out there for the money. Some places have them for around $85 - don't get it from Tower, they always have it listed higher than it should be. [email protected] is tough to beat for that kind of money, especially for a servo that comes in a heatsink case.

Also you may want to replace your servo saver - the new plastic wears out instantly with any tube hits and though it may not look worn out in the truck, you'll notice it when you take it out. If there is ANY change in the material at all (plastic pushed out along the path of the cam) it needs replaced (part #9659). Also make sure you're using the FT heavy duty servo saver spring (part #9657).

Even with clean driving on a high-bite track, I still have to replace the servo savers every 3-4 weeks on my vehicles because the new material is just so soft. One of the reasons I'll be ordering up a RT5 here soon :tmb

What is a high voltage servo? Says it used 7.4v? Do you need something else to run this?

I think I'm really looking at Savox..

depending if i can run high voltage..

SAVSV1271SG - High Voltage Ultra Speed Servo .08/347 @7.4V.

SAVSV1273TG - High Voltage Ultra Speed Servo .065/222 @7.4V.

if not.. then this one is 6v:

SAVSC1258TG - High Speed Titanium Gear Servo .08/167.

A high voltage servo will run fine with a normal setup, it just won't have the specs listed there. The specs listed are for 7.4v input, which would be an unregulated 2s lipo receiver pack in a nitro car.

If you go with the Savox brand, be sure to buy capacitors for your receivers if you are running a Castle or Tekin ESC - the servos draw an immense amount of current and most BEC's can't handle it, causing radio issues.

I'm running a losi MRX-3000 rx, with a Novak Havoc 3s/17.5 Ballistic combo..

Where do the caps get installed?

it would just plug into a spare port on your receiver - Spektrum's capacitor or the Novak Glitch Buster is what you would be looking for. I don't know how the Savox servos work in conjunction with Novak esc's, but the $6 for the capacitor is worth the extra insurance.

1258TG ordered.. if I have issues I will pick up the cap or maybe a Castle BEC..

I dunno how that will work tho.. because I only have 1 port for batt, and thats used by my transponder..?

Y harness?

Use your bind port if the rx has one - just put it in there. It works like any other receiver port, with 6v flowing through it.

hmmm very interesting... I just ran two trucks that have castle esc's and had servo problems.

I am gonna look into the capacitor thanks for the heads up... I have been banging my head all morning

spektrum capacitor $5 http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/61_124/products_id/6570/n/Spektrum-Voltage-Protector/utm_source/Google-Base/utm_medium/cpc/utm_campaign/Product-Feeds/source/google_ext

or cc bec $24, I'll go with the spektrum gear

An external BEC would definitely solve your problems for good and is well worth the money, whereas a capacitor will "get you by" as sort-of a band-aid. I use the caps whenever I have an ESC that only has a 5v or low-amp bec so it can handle the rigors of what I'm using it for.

servo came today.. time will tell if I need the cap or not..

I had to order it from ebay because it's out of stock virtually everywhere
