It's a shame that people attacked the driver, it's a shame that people lost their lives while attending a racing event. The one I feel for the most is the driver, even though it was not his fault he must live with it for the rest of his life. People need to have some common sense at these events. What do you think was going to happen if something went wrong when you chose to stand 10 feet from the track? This is why we have so many rules, regulations and laws... it's to give stupid people guidelines. Just imagine if Nascar had no fences or walls...

I liked how the authorities mention there were no retaining walls or barricades like it was the race promoters fault ... no duh Einstein ... it's a freaking desert!

10 feet away from the track in a section where there's a huge jump ... what did they expect to happen ... ask me ... that's suicide ... just like those idiots who stand in the corners and jumps at rally car races.

This same group of morons would've been standing right next to the track cussing & throwing their garbage at Jeff Gordon's car every time he made a lap ... lol.

Yep, it sucks. But people need to have some common sense. The worst thing I heard was someone on tv say, "is there any word as to why the truck lost control?". Hahahaha. They were racing in the desert!!!!!!!!!!!!!

or this one
One of the parents was saying there was no crowd supervision, ummm how many people you think that would take to cover a race like that?? :bang

I can here it now, our #*@$!%& congress will pass a law that you need track marshall/crowd supervisers every 10 feet or you can't hold a motorsports event. :ack

That's the sad fact is this tragedy will be used as a spring board for the BLM, Sierra Club, and any other organization that has an interest in shutting down off-road/desert racing and off-road recreation.

Sadly common sense isn't so common these days and it's a world wide issue. Just look at the people who line the outside of high speed corners 6-10 people deep at rally races. I think the only worse place you could spectate from would be a lawn chair in the middle of the track.

Its a damn shame that this sort of thing happens.

Besides the spectators not being safe, has anyone seen the special about the villagers that during some of the BAJA races, set up traps for the trucks to wreck. Then when the trucks wreck, they steal as many parts off of them as fast as possible, they then either resell the parts back to the teams or use the parts for building their homes. I think I saw this on the show Real TV.

On a side note. Does anyone know if Clark Gable JR(yes the late actors son) still races the Desert trucks?

If people are outraged at crowd control at US desert races than they should go down to the Baja. Anything pretty much goes. People in the streets, street cars driving portions of the course, etc.

The crowds have been that close for years...even tho, they have news people there to cover the races and never mention about how close the crowd is. Then something like this happens, and its the drivers fault..Thats a load of BS. This country is going to the crapper with all this garbage. If you can control your senses to say, its ok to be that close to a vehicle, your a idiot to begin with. If I was that close...my senses would tell me to back up!!! I see it happening now (as mentioned above) they are going to get sued, and will demand some ridiculous precautions which wont be feasible, and cause the race to be shut down.

Standing that close is not only dumb its to much of a pucker factor for me
Pucker Factor (The pucker factor is a scale by which someone can assign a numerical value, from one to ten,to an occurance or encounter that frightens or terrifies. This describes the level of reaction of the sphincter during times of crisis. NOTE:A Pucker Factor of 10 can only be truly achieved upon death or dismemberment.)

Yea! The only thing that I would be thinking is "what if he" ,blows a tire, gets sideways, adjusts his mirror, cant see because its DUSTY!! etc etc etc. Damn, I feel uncomfortable as hell standing on the freeway shoulder with people driving by doing 70!!

I'm a pretty big motorcycle road racing fan, I say to everyone about this kinda stuff:

"Motorsport is Dangerous - look it even says so on the back of your ticket!"

It's either the truth or a figure of speech depending on if you have a ticket for the event or not, but the principle is the same.
